MCCHS Friday Focus
259th Issue - March 3, 2023
From the Desk of Mrs. Debra Novy Cunico
As we enter the last week of Quarter 3, I wanted to focus not just on academics (which seems to be the obvious topic for me) but also on Lent… and how these two can complement each other.
As we all know, Lent is a time to reassess our relationship with God, returning to Him with our whole heart. It’s a time to ask ourselves where we are in our relationship with our Lord and commit more deeply with Him.
As Quarter 3 ends, our students can also reassess where they are academically, as they journey to the final quarter of this school year. At the beginning of February, each grade level had the opportunity to meet with myself and a representative from Guidance. They were all given a copy of their transcript and were guided to better understand what information is on it and what it means. Of course, depending on the grade level, the talks ranged from setting short term goals for this semester, to what impact their 6th semester grades will have on college admittance, to why the grades on the last semester senior year still do matter.
Just as we experience ebbs and tides in our faith journey with the Lord, students certainly do experience these “blips” in their engagement, motivation, and understanding of the impact their high school progress has on their future plans.
When we think about our faith journey during Lent, we begin to recognize that we cannot do this alone. We are almost always supported by our faith leaders, family members, friends, and others. We need to reassure our students that they are also not alone in their academic journey here at Marian Central Catholic. We need to continuously remind them that their parents and other family members, friends, teachers, counselors, administrators, coaches, and many other potential mentors are all here to help them be successful along their four-year journey through Marian.
Let’s journey through this Lenten season, of course, reconnecting with God, but also reconnecting with our students. Just as God reassures us that when we put our faith in Him (and even when we stumble in our faith), He will most certainly be there for us…. let’s reassure our students that they can make goals, take steps to achieve them, and by all means succeed in what they set their minds to accomplishing. The confidence that we have, through our Father, is the confidence we need to help our students find within themselves.
I pray that you have a meaningful Lenten journey, and that our students find the hope and confidence to be successful for this school year and beyond, knowing that we are behind them the whole way.

Grading Scale - New for 2023-2024
CollegeStock 2023 – March 13th – 17th
What is CollegeStock 2023?
CollegeStock 2023 is an opportunity for all our students to interact with colleges, universities, and military branches in a relaxed environment. Representatives will have tables set up in the Café during both lunch periods. They will have information to provide interested students, can answer questions about their campuses or academic programs and student life opportunities, or can assist seniors with next steps in the process. Please encourage your son or daughter to stop by their favorite colleges/branches, or all of them, to get more information. Students will also have the opportunity to win swag by asking quality meaningful questions to the representatives.

Junior Students and Parents – April ACT Registration (Deadline: Friday, March 10)
Every year, Marian Central Catholic High School serves as a test center for the ACT in April. This year, the test date will be Saturday, April 15th, 2023. The deadline to register for the April test date is Friday, March 10. Please be aware that while we serve as a test center, we are not able to reserve seats solely for our Marian Central students. If you are interested in signing up for the April 15th ACT, please register on the ACT Registration website. For the April 15th test here at Marian, be sure to use our school code: 144475 and our test center code: 174990.
Another important piece to note is, effective January 1, 2022 Illinois' public institutions will be prohibited from requiring the submission of student test scores as part of the admissions process. Overall, this is positive news and a trend we're seeing at many institutions across the country. One caveat that we want you to be aware of though is that students who wish to be considered as IL State Scholar candidates will still be required by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) to take the ACT or SAT during their junior year (between August 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023) to be considered for State Scholar designation.
