World War II
BY: Matthew Meneses
World War II started on September 1, 1939 and ended on September 2, 1945.
There are two teams- the Axis powers and the Allies powers. The Axis powers consisted of Germany, Italy and Japan and the Allies powers consisted of France, Great Britain, United States, the Soviet Union and China.
Leading Up to World War II
Two decades after the events of World War II Adolf Hitler and his army National Socialist Party, The Nazis, rearmed the nation and signed strategic treaties with Italy and Japan to continue his plan for world domination. In late August, 1939, Hitler and the Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin signed the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact. Hitler later in September invaded Poland. Two days later, Britain and France declared war on Germany, which started World War II.
The Holocaust
Hitler had plans
called the final solution. It was to murder millions of Jews in concentration camps. It began with Operation Barbarossa. Hitler had plans to invade the Soviet Union and the other half of his plans was elimination of the Jews.
Estimated 6 million Jews were murdered
in Hitler's Concentration Camps after the War was over.
45-60 million people killed
during World War II and about 10% of them were Jews.
World War II in the Americas
The biggest affect on America in World War II was the bombings of Pearl Harbor. The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 in Hawaii.
The Japanese
managed to destroy nearly 20 American vessel including eight enormous battleships.
The Japanese
also took down and destroyed 200 American airplanes at Pearl Harbor.
More than
2,000 American soldiers and sailors died in the attack and 1,000 were wounded.
One day after the attacks
President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan. Three days later, Japan allied Germany and Italy and also declared war on the United States. After 2 years into World War II, United States had officially joined World War II
The END of World War II
World War II ended on September 2, 1945. June 6, 1944 is celebrated as D-Day. It was when the Allied sent 156,000 soldiers on the beaches of Normandy, France. In response, Hitler poured all of his remaining strength of his army in to Western Europe. Germany tried pushing them back and later started the Battle of the Bulge. Germany eventually surrendered on May 8th (Hitler was already dead, as he committed suicide on April 30 in his Berlin Bunker).
