Family Night Keynote: "I Didn’t Sign Up for This!” The Social-Emotional Journey of Parenting a Gifted Child
Discovering your child is gifted should be a time of joy and celebration. However, once parents understand the responsibility associated with parenting a gifted and talented child, they often feel, "I didn't sign up for this!" In addition to serving their gifted child's social-emotional needs, parents, too, have their own social-emotional needs that must be met. Issues such as the parent's own revelation of giftedness, angst in ensuring their child's needs are met, doubt over the ability to raise a gifted child, frustration in advocating for their child, grief over the loss of a "normal" childhood, and overall burnout in supporting their child's needs are all social-emotional factors that parents often experience. This session will explore the various social-emotional needs of parents of gifted and talented children, how they might address each of these issues when they arise, and how they can ensure their own self-care, health, and well-being while raising a gifted child.
