2nd and 3rd Grade Safety Online Understandings
Understanding 1: It's Okay to Talk to Strangers With These Rules.
The internet is a place you can chat to real people. All the same rules you use for talking to strangers on the street are the same.- Check first with a grown up.
- Be polite.
- Keep personal information private. Only use first names or nicknames. If someone is asking you for this information, do NOT give it out. It's okay to tell a trusted grownup!
Understanding 2: The Internet Isn't Always Safe or Good
You can't always believe everything you read on the internet. It's easy to fake things, even photographs. It's easy for people to sound smart when they are lying. Sometimes they are trying to sell you things. You HAVE to think for yourself... Does what you are seeing make sense? There are a lot of things that are rude, really scary, or inappropriate. If you see something surprising or confusing, it's okay to tell! Use trusted websites like KidRex.org instead of Google whenever you can. Protect your passwords and do not share them so that people cannot hack your accounts and see your private messages.
Understanding 3: Cyberbullies are NOT Okay
You can be tracked. It might seem like you are in a secret world when you have a nickname in a game or on a chat room, but you are not. You need to act just the way you would in real life with all the same friendship rules. Don't be mean online. Don't spread lies about people. If someone is doing that to you, it's okay to tell! When people act horrible online it is called cyberbullying and it is NOT okay. If we wouldn't say it to someone's face, then we don't type it online!
