Middle College Update 5/18/15
This is my final update for the 2014-2015 school year! I am very much looking forward to a restful summer up in Sonoma County--investigating exactly what it is my husband really does when "working" from home ;-)
- To all the parents of seniors, thank you for your support and good luck to you in the coming college years. We can't wait to see you at our end-of-year celebration next week on Thursday (5/28 from 3:00-5:00)! Halo has requested that all seniors report to her in the quad to line up/get ready by 2:30 (Juniors should be there by 2:45).
- To all the parents of current juniors, I look forward to working with you again next year as we navigate the college applications/selection process. All juniors know that I will be available to them Friday, May 29th, to discuss final grades for Engl. III on an individual basis, if they should wish.
I am available via email over summer, though I try very hard to be not-quite-so-responsive as during the school year. I will be busy updating transcripts with college grades as soon as college grades post the week of June 8th. By the end of that week all transcripts should be completely up-to-date. We've reminded the seniors that final transcripts sent to colleges must be sent from their home high school, but this can happen starting the week of June 15th. Colleges expect them to be sent by July 1st.

Info For Summer/Next Year
The summer session is from June 15- July 23. Students need to keep in mind that in the summer the drop date comes very quickly--in some cases, the drop date is the first day of class. Make sure you notify me immediately if your plans change. You can look at the summer and fall schedule here.
Students enrolling in online classes should check their my.smccd email accounts and WebAccess for the syllabus, course information and materials.
A reminder for those taking summer classes: during summer tuition is waived, but families are responsible for the cost of the college textbooks.
Our fall semester begins on Aug. 10. College classes begin the following week, on Aug 17, so those first few days we will have orientation, get books, and discuss the summer reading, My Beloved World.
Counselors are assigned to students alphabetically by last name. Right now it looks as if I will keeping my same set of juniors into senior year. For a few students on the cusp, keep in mind that if the alphabet shifts a bit you may have another counselor next year; however, each of us is always available to counsel students about anything at any time. The assigned counselor is mainly responsible for keeping track of graduation requirements and submitting schedules.
Getting a Head Start on Personal Statements
UC Personal Statement Prompts--no matter what UC you apply to, these will be the prompts for freshmen (we will go over these in depth):
- Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.
- Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?
Common App Prompts--most (though not all) private college use The Common Application
