Celebrations and Looking Forward
As we start the third week of school, I can't help but reflect on all of the wonderful things happening already at JDAL. Our fabulous students have accomplished so much these first few weeks, including 96% attendance average, 0 behavior issues, over 2600 ALEKS math topics completed, and pages and pages of research for their initial independent projects!
Advisories have been working hard to get to know one another and set norms for what they want their space to look, sound, and feel like. Student voice is important to us at JDAL, so staff have provided the time and space to listen to student concerns as well.
We are incredibly excited to be in this new building and a location so close to downtown. This doesn't mean there haven't been growing pains, however. We want to make sure parents and students know they can express their concerns with us - in person, via phone, or email. JDAL staff looks forward to working with families and students to create a learning environment that meets the needs of each person as best we possibly can.
One concern already expressed is the dinner after school. We are incredibly grateful to be able to offer this FREE dinner to our students, but the federal government does have requirements we need to follow. This includes having to eat the dinner at school. I apologize for the miscommunication that occurred regarding this. We hope that students will continue to take advantage of this opportunity Monday thru Thursday from 3:30-4.
Looking ahead, several new learning opportunities are available for students of all ages!
PBL 101 SEMINAR - (gr 9-11) - New students, as well as some returning students, will begin their guided project with Ms. Melissa on Monday. This seminar will meet Mondays and Wednesday in room 215. Group A meets 12:15 - 12:45 and Group B meets 12:45 - 1:15.
PBL 101 SEMINAR (gr 6-9) - New middle school students will begin their guided project with Ms. Jenna on Monday. This seminar will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 12:15 - 1:15 in room 202.
HOPE SEMINAR (gr 6-12) - Ms. Becky is offering the HOPE seminar again this year. HOPE stands for Hope-filled Optimistic Perspectives Everyday. In this seminar, students will discover different ways to look at how what we think, is what we feel, is what we do. Topics discovered will be esteem, optimism vs. pessimism, pro-social vs. anti-social thoughts and behaviors, anger, worry, depression, thinking barriers vs. responsible thinking, boundaries, valuing of self, forgiveness, healthy relationships, etc. This seminar meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 2-3 in the seminar room.
INQUIRIES (gr 6-8; 9-12) - We are trying something new this year to give students a short introduction to a topic. Inquiries are week long learning experiences that are introduced on Mondays and assessed on Fridays. Returning students can accumulate inquiries for credit similar to how Life Long Learning credit works. New students will be able to earn standards. Please ask advisors who are leading Inquiries for details.
With gratitude,
Jen + the JDAL staff
