Whittier's Weekly Newsletter

Message from the Principal
Dear Whittier Parents/Guardians,
I was able to participate in a webinar involving the importance of school attendance. During this webinar, research and statistics were mentioned, that as parents, I would like to share with you.
If your child has missed:
- 5% of school = this means 1-9 days
- 10% or more = this means 10+ days = chronic absenteeism
- 20% or more = this means 20+ days = severe chronic absenteeism
Of the youth in the juvenile system, 75% of them had chronic or severe chronic absenteeism. Research found a tremendous link between students identified with chronic absenteeism and their ability to be successful in math and reading classes. Teachers have a hard time catching students up and students do not feel part of their classroom and school community. (If you would like to know how many days your child has been absent, please visit your parent Infinite Campus portal or call the office.)
Here at Whittier we ask parents to have students line up with their class to have a strong start to their day. This ensures consistency, builds classroom community and builds our students confidence in what to expect on a daily basis.
We welcome you to continue this partnership with us in supporting your child meet their fullest potential; we need them here EVERYDAY, ALL DAY! Every minute counts!
Thank you for staying connected and engaged! Remind your student to read, read, read! :)

STATE FORWARD EXAM- For ALL 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Students
Our first week of testing was great! Students were focused and ready to do their best. There were many cheerleaders cheering them on; check out the picture below.
During these weeks of testing, please ensure your student is receiving enough hours of sleep, arriving to school on time and staying all day, everyday!
Please avoid any doctors appointments during this time. Teachers will be sharing your students testing schedule via their classroom communication.
Thank you for your support!
