Orana Catholic Primary School
Term 2 Week 10
Excellence
Our community values an attitude of enthusiastically applying energy and effort to become better learners. Excellence is evident when:
• we do our best to develop our talents and share them with others
• we have high expectations of what we can achieve
• we take risks and experiment with the way we learn
• we work hard to do our best work
• we celebrate our achievements
A Prayer for NAIDOC Week 3-10 July 2022 (Aboriginal Style by Uncle Rev Ron Williams)
He will always look after me and take me to green grass,
and lead me to where the water holes are
full and fresh all the time.
He leads me away from the thick scrub and helps me keep safe from the hunters, dingoes and eagles.
At night time when I am very lonely and sad,
I will not be afraid,
for my Father covers me with his feathers
like a father emu.
His spear and shield will always protect me.
My big fella boss always give me a good feed
in the middle of my enemies.
In hot times, he makes me sit down in a cool shade and rest.
He gives me plenty of love and care all of my life through.
Then I will live with my big fella boss like a father emu:
that cares for his chicks in good country, full of peace and safety
For evermore and evermore. AMEN.
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we come to the end of another school term like no other, let us also celebrate the ‘normal’ life that we enjoyed. In a typical school day, where we make the most of every moment to deliver a quality curriculum to our students, it is difficult to digest all the additional events that have occurred if we list these:
· ANZAC Day Service prepared by Year 6 leaders
· Band and choirs resumed
· St Francis of Assisi House Celebration Day
· Visits/Liturgies/Reconciliation/Masses for PK to Year 6
· Junior and Senior Assemblies
· Mothers’ Day Morning Tea
· NAPLAN for Year 3 and 5
· Junior Community Mass at our Parish
· Interschool Multi Sports Carnival for Year 5 and 6
· P & F Meetings
· School Advisory Council Meetings
· Swimming Lessons for Year 1-6
· Homeless Food Roster
· Reconciliation Week
· Year 6 Camp Meeting
· Graduation Meetings
· Life Link Launch
· Cross Country for Year 3 to 6
· First Holy Communion Retreat
· Excursion to Kings Park for Year 2
· First Holy Communion
· Grandparents’ Morning
· West Oz Life Incursion for PP
· Interschool Cross Country
· P & F Canteen Day
· Bully Zero Incursion for Year 1 to 6
It is essential to make time as a family to reset if we can. Our children have been very busy and they too, must be given time to fall out of a routine that will re-charge their batteries.
Enjoy this time together and stay safe.

Social Justice Team News
Thank you to everyone who contributed blankets for the Caritas Ukraine Appeal. We collected over 30 blankets which will be delivered to the Caritas office over the holidays. Your support is greatly appreciated.
Social Justice Team Plant Sale
After last year's very successful plant sale, we will be holding the event again in Term Three. Money raised will be used to support the Orana staff's ongoing commitment to provide meals for the homeless. If you would like to donate plants, pots or potting mix it would be greatly appreciated. We welcome cuttings as the Social Justice group will plant and cultivate them. Donations can be dropped off at the Year 4 W classroom from the beginning of Term Three. The Social Justice Group will care for any plants and cuttings until the plant sale, which will be held on Open Night in Week Six. You may want to start propagating over the holidays!
LifeLink Day
Today the Orana community participated in a PYJAMA DAY to raise funds for LifeLink. The money collected will provide much needed funds for the Catholic Church agencies which help the homeless, people who are disadvantaged and those in need. Thank you to the Year Fives who organised this activity.

A Picture is Nothing Like The Real Thing - Don’t Let Life Scroll By
By Hannah C
A recent survey in Australia interviewed 1,000 people of different ages, and found that the average Australian spends five and a half hours a day on their phones. This shocked me because it seems like such a long time to spend on your phone. Although, I often find myself jumping on quickly to check something on my iPad, only to realise that an hour has passed, because my parents come telling me to get off! This always surprises me because I feel like I’ve only been on my device for a few minutes. When I get off I’m sometimes cranky and tired, even though I haven’t moved!
Mum and I often talk about her childhood with little technology and this made me think about how different my life is. I’ve also started to notice, when I am on a bus or train or even in a restaurant, people are distracted by what’s in their hands. Even though most of the people I see are adults, there are quite a few kids, playing on their iPads or phones.
I’m now 10 and from seeing adults and teenagers doing everything on their phones like ordering pizza and getting movie tickets, I know that technology is only going to get bigger in my life. I’ve started to think about what activities give me something that screens can’t. On looking into this topic I liked the idea of ‘green time instead of screen time”. Getting outside to ride my bike or practice my netball.
So what’s my plan to make sure my life’s not scrolling by? We have set up something on my iPad called ‘Screen Time’. This sets how long I can have before my iPad locks the apps. After I have been on technology, I’m going to take a brain break (just like we do at school), and practice my netball, or do some sort of craft. The most important thing that I have learnt, is that life on a device will never be as good as real life.

Bully Zero
UNDERSTANDING BULLYING
Yesterday, our Year 1-6 students went to a Bully Zero Incursion which provided them with evidence-based information on bullying; the different types of bullying and its impact on young people. They were also taught a variety of strategies to help them assess and respond to bullying situations, whilst also identifying and understanding the role of bystanders.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE
On Tuesday, 26th July 6-7.30pm, parents are invited to attend the following workshop.
The session is aimed at Teachers and Parents and recognises the importance of the whole school community coming together to help recognise and prevent all types of bullying. The session provides understanding of bullying behaviours, how to recognise it and how to prevent it and manage it.
COVID-19 Update
WA Health provides information directly to the Covid-19 positive person / caregiver following their registration of a Covid-19 positive test result with WA Health via this Link.
Parents and carers are encouraged to continue their reporting of close contact or Covid-19 positive status to schools through the Covid-19 self-reporting portal via this link. The CEWA COVID-19 Self-Reporting Portal has been updated to align with the current WA Health’s Health Test, Trace, Isolate, Quarantine (TTIQ) Directions. Please do not underestimate the importance of informing the school of a positive Covid-19 case / Close Contact status. Your actions will ensure the risk to others is minimised and that we do our very best to limit the spread of the virus across our community. While RATs can be a convenient and efficient method of testing, a PCR test continues to be the preferred method of COVID-19 detection, due to its clinical accuracy. Where a person is symptomatic of COVID-19, they should be encouraged to undertake a PCR test and isolate, even if a preliminary RAT has returned a negative result.
Health and hygiene promotion and enhanced cleaning regimes remain in place. For now, some risk minimisation strategies remain in place which are over and above the government measures for the safety of our community. Further information on school operating guidelines for the new baseline settings is available on the school website.
Week 10 (27th June to 1st July)
There were 3 cases reported to the school this week. Please carefully monitor for symptoms and get tested if symptoms develop. Please keep your children at home if they are unwell.
As stated in the correspondence sent via SEQTA on Thursday, 23rd June, people are not required to be vaccinated to work/volunteer/visit on school grounds from 10th June.
Term 3 Reporting
From Term 3, the school will not be sending out individual communication to families of positive cases. Parents will automatically receive confirmation direct from WA Health. If you do have any concerns though, please contact the school office.

Positive Behaviours and Student Support Guidelines - Part 7
Sometimes, schools must implement an Individual Positive Behaviours Plan when a child requires specific strategies to help him or her acquire the skills to engage in a positive manner.
A primary school's number one goal is to equip our children of today to be healthy and happy citizens of society tomorrow. We don't give up; we empower and build relationships in our children.

Unearthing Kids Strengths for Happiness and Success
Personality strengths - our character – play a big role in helping us build our talents. Think about anyone who has built a talent and imagine if it could have been done without character. Imagine Einstein without curiosity, The Beatles without creativity, Mother Teresa without compassion and Neil Armstrong without bravery.
