Congratulations Jaylen Hackett!

Jaylen is a Junior studying Economics and Political Science. He has been accepted to the PPIA Junior Summer Institute program for this summer. The institute offers programs at five sites and Jaylen was matched with his #1 choice-Princeton!

Congratulations Courtney Grinnell!

Courtney is a Geography major with an emphasis in Sustainable Development. She has been accepted into the 2016 Mississippi Water Security Institute at the University of Mississippi this May! This program is the first of three yearly Institutes funded by the Robert M. Hearin Foundation.

Call for Papers!

The Kathanne W. Greene Award is an annual essay and research article competition on gender issues. This competition is open to any Southern Miss student from any discipline. A prize of $200 is awarded to the top undergraduate submissions. Deadline: Tuesday, March 1

The MacArthur Foundation genius-award winning journalistwhose exposes for The Clarion-Ledger helped to put numerous Klan members behind bars, including:

  • Byron De La Beckwith for the assassination of Medgar Evers
  • Sam Bowers for ordering the murder of Vernon Dahmer
  • Bobby Cherry for the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing
  • Edgar Ray Killen for his role in killing Michael Schwerner, James Chaney and Andrew Goodman.

Launch of Health is Golden at Gulf Park

You are invited to attend a celebration of the launch of the Health is Golden campaign which is made possible by a $196,800 grant from Blue Cross & Blue Shield.

This campaign seeks to create a culture of wellness on USM's Gulf Park campus by providing recreational activities, wellness programs and educational services to Southern Miss students, faculty and staff. For more information visit the Health is Golden page.

Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival

Free and open to the public, the festival will feature an Easter egg hunt for children ages 12 and under, local artists and craftsmen, food vendors and activities for the entire family.

Alternative Spring Break

The Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE) invites students on the following trips:

  • Alternative Spring Break in Shaw Mississippi on March 13-17. This trip is centered on the history of the Mississippi Delta and would give students the opportunity to do community service and visit several historically important sites!
  • Project Serve Canada 2016 is taking place at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada from May 15-26. Students will have the opportunity to learn about organic farming and cooking along with several other eco-friendly activities. This trip will give students 3 credit hours in IDS492CA.

Deadlines: March 4

Mississippi N.E.W. Leadership Program

Aspiring young women leaders at USM are invited to apply for the Fourth Annual Mississippi N.E.W. Leadership Program, co-sponsored by the Stennis Center for Public Service and Mississippi University for Women (MUW). This five-day, four-night residential program begins May 23 at the MUW campus in Columbus. Deadline: March 1, 2016
