Loose Parts would be very appropriate for home visiting as well....so I hope that our Parent Educators enjoy this learning as well.
Project Approach Training in Peoria, Illinois
There is a book on "Project Approach" for Parent Education...woohoo, you know I've ordered that one!! So read up Parent Educators, for your every other week families, I could see this being a really meaningful addition to your planning. It is a very natural home activity: my sister has had a "prison" project going on at her house for months (she does not love the topic, but he sure does)!! Parents tend to take their kids to see, hear, touch those things they are obsessed with (for us it was trains, we hit the first two phases, but I could have done deeper project work with Wes had I known this way back then)...so it's an easy fit for the home!!
I've included pics below of the PIG project, in hopes of bringing these phases to life for you through images.
The Three Phases of a Project
Phase 1: Beginning
- Identify potential topic initiated by children
- Build children's background knowledge
- Narrow topic further
- Help children create list of questions to investigate
Phase 2: Investigation
- Collect resources for investigating topic (books, videos, artifacts)
- help children use resources
- Arrange to meet with experts on topic
- Arrange field site visits
- Note new questions
- Help children record and represent what they've learned
Phase 3: Culmination
- Guide children to reflect on what they've learned
- List what children know now
- Help children find a way to share their learning (make a book, give a presentation, visit another class)
