Rusch March 2019
A GREAT PLACE TO BE: EVERY STUDENT, EVERY CHANCE, EVERY DAY
Mr. Meyer's Message
I want to thank you for your continued commitment to your child's educational experience this year at Rusch! We continue to encourage you to take an active role in every aspect of your child's schooling while they attend Rusch! We understand that each family is unique and therefore each family's needs, goals, and aspirations are unique. Our goal is to meet every student where they are at and move them in the direction of where they wish to go. In other words, we are partners in your child's education. We can only be successful if our partnership is an equal one. We need your engagement in our school as much as you need our engagement and investment in your child. Together we can help your child achieve his/her full potential while they are with us at Rusch!
If you would like to come in and talk with me about potential volunteer opportunities, I would love to talk with you and find something that fits your and your child's needs! We want to create a school environment where students, parents, and staff work together as a team toward the goal of student achievement!
I also wanted to use this opportunity to give you, as a parent at a neighborhood school, a resource. This is a link for a website about teaching students about "stranger danger". Although it is a topic that parents never want to think about, it is a topic that is a reality for communities across this country. The site gives student friendly examples of how to handle situations that they may encounter on their walk to or from school. https://www.safety4kids.com.au/safety-zone/stranger-danger/strangers-in-cars. Please consider talking with your child about stranger danger if you haven't already done so!
I look forward to seeing you at school this month!
Thanks again for all you do for your child at home and at school!

5th Grade News
The 5th Grade students have been hard at work learning how to multiply fractions in math. They are learning that they need to apply the skills that they have learned in previous lessons in order to solve a lot of their math problems. In reading they are currently working on Story Structure and learning about how important each of these pieces are in the stories that they read every day.
The fifth graders also had Mrs. Schulz, the guidance counselor at Bartels Middle School, come and talk to them about what the junior high will be like next year. They were all very excited and interested in the information that she shared with them.
The fifth grade choir students were very fortunate to be able to participate in the Opera for the Young. They not only got to sing in the choir, but some of the students also got to work with the professional actors and participate in the skit that they had planned for all of the students and staff at Rusch Elementary.

Keeping our Children Lead-Safe
Was your home built before 1978? If so, your children could be exposed to lead in the dust from lead-based paint. Just a small amount of lead dust can cause learning disabilities, developmental delays, and other behavior and health problems for your child. Fortunately, you can prevent exposure to lead by making sure your home is lead-safe.
Get your young children tested for lead.

Multi-State Measles Outbreak
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has reported measles cases are currently occurring in ten states. The following is information about measles and how to prevent it.
Measles is a viral infection that causes fever, cough, a rash, sore eyes, and can lead to serious complications. Measles spreads very easily, so it is important to protect against infection. Getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent measles.
For further details about measles, and the vaccine MMR, please go to: https://www.portage.k12.wi.us/district/cd.cfm
Parents may check their child’s immunization records that are on file with school by going into the Infinite Campus Parent Portal Health section. Call me to discuss resources for where to obtain vaccines. 608/742-4867, ext. 4131.
