Westwood Families,
Learning continues with nine weeks of school remaining in this very unusual school year. We’re focused on making these meaningful weeks of learning for all of our students – whether they are learning at school or at home.
I’m sure, like me, many of you have seen or heard about increasing COVID-19 cases in the community. At Westwood, we are seeing these trends reflected in student cases with eight reported over the last five days. I want to share with you how we are approaching positive cases and quarantine and assure you that we continue all of our mitigation strategies at school - cleaning protocols, wearing masks, limiting passing times, reminding students to wash hands and physically distancing at 3-6 feet.
At this point, we’ve had no known transmissions of COVID-19 at school. Through contact tracing, we’re learning that activities outside of school have been primary drivers for positive cases. Working with officials at the Minnesota Department of Health, we do now have more than 120 Westwood students in quarantine to help limit any potential spread. Families of these students have been contacted directly.
Our teachers continue – and will continue – to teach in-person at school. Students in quarantine, now or in the future, will hear from teachers directly through Schoology with opportunities for live learning, office hours and/or other learning supports along with posting daily work.
We continue to follow updated guidelines in the Minnesota Safe Learning Plan. The school would only move to a more restricted learning model if infection rates reach or exceed 5 percent – which is the same as guidance for flu. We are and will continue to manage contact tracing and quarantine through classrooms and teams.
Please continue to carefully monitor health symptoms and keep students home if they have any symptoms. Please also encourage and support your student in making good choices outside of school hours knowing that these choices impact our students’ ability to attend school in person.
Thank you for everything you are doing at home to ensure our whole learning community can keep learning in their chosen model.
