Reliving History
The Power of Theater to Teach Empathy
On October 3-5th, Marine City High School's Mariner Drama presented the play Mockingbird, based on Kathryn Erksine's award-winning novel. Over 800 Marine City 4th through 9th graders were impacted by the powerful story at daytime matinees at the East China PAC. Mockingbird tells the story of Caitlin, a fifth grader with Asperger's Syndrome. Caitlin has lost her brother to a school shooting. Through her and her father's grieving process, the audience is taken on a story that focuses on empathy, compassion, and not judging others.
Following the play, students (and audience members at night) were asked to offer their thoughts on how the play affected them by writing their reactions on a big puzzle piece. Some of the comments included:
" The ending made me cry. It really helped me see how people with various disabilities can have such a hard time during everyday activities."
" I related a lot to the play. My family lost my mom when I was in sixth grade. My brother has Asperger's and (the play) helped me understand him more."
"I hope those that see this play will learn how sometimes small things and actions can make a BIG difference."
" The play really hit me because I struggle getting closer to other students and people, and it made me realize I'm not alone."
The whole weekend brought great reactions and wonderful post-show conversations on how we treat one another. Bravo to the cast and crew for bringing such an important story to the stage.

Girls' Cross Country
The MCHS Girls' Cross Country team concluded their season with an 8th place finish at the Regional Meet at Goodells County Park Saturday, October 26th. Many of the girls ran season and personal records setting themselves up for a promising start next year.
The regular season was another successful one for the Lady Mariners, finishing 2nd place in the MAC Blue Conference with a record of 12-2. Earning All-Conference honors at the Divisional Meet were senior, Alyssa Pollauf and sophomore, Makenna Morse.
The 2020 season will be here before we know it and with only two graduating seniors, the Mariners should be ready to build on their experience and have an even more successful season.
Boys' Cross Country
Marine City Boys' Cross Country finished third in the MAC Blue with two athletes earning All-Conference recognition, Conner Uppleger and Matt Maliskey. At the regional level, we finished seventh out of 12 teams, one point behind Lutheran North, with Conner Uppleger earning All-Region honors and heading to states the first weekend of November. Out of 16 boys, 15 of them earned a new personal record (PR), having a fantastic end to their season.
