Impact on America

Fashion brings a sense of individuality into a person's personality. The events of America has greatly influenced the style of women's fashion. If a decade is conservative, the clothes of that decade would also be conservative.

Fashion of the 30's to 40's

Event:

Great Depression, WWII

Fashion:

More functional and military-inspired clothing with square shoulders. Once WWII started, clothes became more restrained.

Fashion of the 50's

Event:

WWII ended, companies such as Chanel began

Fashion:

fitted jackets, cinched waist, feminine, calf-length skirts

Fashion of the 60's

Event:

The hippie movement

Fashion:

Bell-bottom jeans, tie-dyed shirts, miniskirt, bohemian-inspired clothing

Fashion of the 70's

Event:

Anti-fashion anarchistic movement, many people were travelling

Fashion:

disco-inspired clothing, flashy styles, bell-bottom jeans, tight and stretchy clothing, the use of polyester

How does fashion differ in each of the decades?

In the 30's, 40's, and 50's, all women wore long skirts, but in the 60's and 70's, short skirts and dresses were introduced.

In the 60's and 70's, women also started wearing pants.

In the 70's, high boots were worn by women.

Fashion in the 30's to 40's were more conservative than the other decades.
