BrightBytes - What is it and Why do you make us fill it out every year?
BrightBytes is a technology assessment that districts use to measure the effectiveness of technology in schools.
Based on the campus CASE score, BrightBytes offers data-driven recommendations.
The district CASE score shows that many of our teachers are more than proficient in the use of technology. Unfortunately, that expertise is not being used to the best advantage in our classrooms.
This short video explains why we must continue to explore technology use with our students whenever possible.
I Have Ideas!
In a perfect world, we would have the student devices and enough building bandwidth, to achieve all the BrightBytes indicators.
We are not in a perfect world, so we have to find practical and creative ways to make at least some of those things in the ISTE video happen.
I have listed some ideas below:
- Zoom video conferencing (in your building, with other FWISD classrooms, or outside the district) - Global Communicator
- Makerspace Activities using non-technology materials to create and technology to document and share - Knowledge Constructor, Computational Thinker, Global Communicator
- Digital student portfolios - Empowered Learner
- Document student work, progress, and assessment using Flipgrid or VoiceThread - Empowered Learner
- Learning to Code and Program using code.org - Computational Thinker
- Promote Digital Citizenship through Common Sense Media lessons - Digital Citizen
- Improve the learning process by using Google Classroom (elementary or middle school) or itslearning.com (middle school) - Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Global Collaborator
- Bring learning to life and enhance student voice with green screen technology (this works best if you have access to an iPad) - Empowered Learner
- Use digital formats to share student work with parents- Empowered Learner, Global Collaborator
If you are interested in exploring ways to use some of these ideas with your students, let's get together and talk.
