Eagle Update: October 23, 2020
Barton Hills Elementary
Hello BHE Families:
As I write this note today and looking at the calendar I am shaking my head that we are headed into the last full week of October! This past week concluded the end of our first nine weeks for elementary school grading periods and report cards will be issued next week. My understanding is the report cards will be sent electronically to parents via email. If this changes, we will let you know.
This will be our first time assigning grades to students since we shut down schools last March. The teachers and I have had conversations about how to fairly assess student learning this first quarter. Barriers to authentic assessment and grading include tech challenges (disappearing assignments, Wifi reliability, devices not working, etc... and workload of assignments for students to complete in BLEND/SeeSaw. Additionally, we've discussed that the standard report card we have to issue - particularly some of the Personal Development criteria does not align neatly to a remote learning environment or how we are currently instructing students. In addition, we're looking to the beginning of year assessments to provide us with good data on student academic achievement but the remote nature of these assessments has led to some real challenges as well - from glitches, to needing multiple appointments to complete the assessment, to students getting assistance from someone else in the room (yes, that has happened). We know these concerns can be distressing for all. As a staff, we continue to have ongoing conversations about our instructional approaches and how to support students who are both in person and learning off campus. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions about your child's report card.
Just in case you are looking for some Friday Night Lights action, our own Austin High Maroons are taking on Lake Travis tonight at 7:15. See the live stream here:
