Eagle Update: October 23, 2020

Barton Hills Elementary

Hello BHE Families:

As I write this note today and looking at the calendar I am shaking my head that we are headed into the last full week of October! This past week concluded the end of our first nine weeks for elementary school grading periods and report cards will be issued next week. My understanding is the report cards will be sent electronically to parents via email. If this changes, we will let you know.

This will be our first time assigning grades to students since we shut down schools last March. The teachers and I have had conversations about how to fairly assess student learning this first quarter. Barriers to authentic assessment and grading include tech challenges (disappearing assignments, Wifi reliability, devices not working, etc... and workload of assignments for students to complete in BLEND/SeeSaw. Additionally, we've discussed that the standard report card we have to issue - particularly some of the Personal Development criteria does not align neatly to a remote learning environment or how we are currently instructing students. In addition, we're looking to the beginning of year assessments to provide us with good data on student academic achievement but the remote nature of these assessments has led to some real challenges as well - from glitches, to needing multiple appointments to complete the assessment, to students getting assistance from someone else in the room (yes, that has happened). We know these concerns can be distressing for all. As a staff, we continue to have ongoing conversations about our instructional approaches and how to support students who are both in person and learning off campus. Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you have any questions about your child's report card.

Just in case you are looking for some Friday Night Lights action, our own Austin High Maroons are taking on Lake Travis tonight at 7:15. See the live stream here:

Thank you for being a part of the Wonderful Barton Hills Elementary Community!

School Spirit Day - October 30th :)

We will not be wearing any types of costumes/costume masks to school on October 30th - except your regular face mask of course, but we will have a school spirit day so wear your Orange and Black and we'll end the week with some October flair :).

Election Day 2020 in the United States is Tuesday, Nov. 3. District campuses have traditionally been used as polling sites on this day and this year AISD is keeping that tradition

The following 10 AISD facilities will serve as Election Day polling sites:

  • AISD Performing Arts Center
  • Bailey Middle School
  • Bedichek Middle School
  • Davis Elementary School
  • Juan P. Navarro High School
  • Langford Elementary School
  • O. Henry Middle School
  • Pleasant Hill Elementary School
  • Small Middle School
  • Zilker Elementary School

Election Day Voting locations are open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Find a complete list and map of Election Day polling sites on the Travis County Clerk website.

As an added safety precaution for our campus communities on election day, the Austin ISD Board of Trustees approved an update to the 2020-21 calendar to include a student holiday on Nov 3, Election Day.

AISD campuses will not be used as polling sites during Early Voting, which runs from Oct. 13-30. To find your Early Voting polling site with current wait time information, visit the Travis County interactive map.

In addition to races at the national and state levels, four Austin ISD trustee seats are up for election: Districts 2, 3, 5 and at-large position 8. A full list of candidates can be found at the Board of Trustees election website.
