Today is the final Friday before we start the 2022 - 2023 school year which means just five more sleeps before school starts! This will be the final "Back to School" district SMORE newsletter prior to our kiddos returning on Wednesday, August 10. Today our information focuses on our construction projects at Park View and South Elementary Schools, COVID-19, and a few reminders for the new school year. For the 2022 - 23 School Year, MGSD will be issuing each student an ID badge. These badges will have the student’s picture, name, bar code, and QR Code. A sample of what the ID badge will look like can be seen in the above photos. Embedded in the barcode is the student ID number and it will be used for the following:

• School Cafeteria Meal Purchases (we will no longer use the 4-digit lunch number).

• School Library Book Checkout

• Various other school transactions that may use a student’s ID

The QR code will be used for our K-3 students to log in to ClassLink and access the online digital resources.

What if my student's picture is missing? Visit the school data manager to have your badge reprinted.

What if I don't want my child’s picture on the badge? Visit the school data manager to have your badge reprinted.

What if my child loses their badge? Students in grades K - 3 will leave their badge at school. Students in grades 4 - 12 will get one reprint per year. If two or more reprints will be required, there will be a $1.00 charge.

We will start the 2022 - 2023 school year much like we ended last year. The state has retired the StrongSchools Toolkit and any new guidance at this time will come from NCDHHS. In addition, NC General Statute (SB 654/Session Law 2021-130 Part X Sect 10) requiring all boards of education to vote on their current face covering policy each month is no longer in effect. The following guidance will be in place on August 10, 2022:

• Masks are not required, but are recommended in certain circumstances (see below).
• We will not be contact tracing and close contacts will not be required to quarantine unless they are symptomatic or test positive (much like any illness). We do recommend a person who has been exposed to a positive individual get tested.
• If you have tested positive, stay home for five days from symptom onset and be fever free for 24 hours. We strongly recommend masking on days 6 - 10 to keep everyone healthy and in school.
• If you are symptomatic with a negative test, you must be fever free for at least 24 hours and have improving symptoms before returning. We strongly recommend masking for 10 days from the onset of symptoms to keep everyone healthy and in school.
• If you are symptomatic but did not test, you must be fever free for at least 24 hours and have improving symptoms before returning. We strongly recommend masking for 10 days from the onset of symptoms to keep everyone healthy and in school. We also recommend a person who is experiencing symptoms get tested.

Remember, your school nurse is always available to assist with questions regarding COVID-19 or any other illness. Thank you!

We have opened our online registration system for the 2022-23 school year. This week you should have received either an email from Registration@mgsd.k12.nc.us with a link OR a letter in the mail that has your student's “SnapCode” and directions for accessing the online registration system. It is vital that we get updated information on your student. Updated student information ensures that all students have continued access to all of the school resources for their classes and ensures that we have the correct emergency contact information for your student should it be needed. Keep in mind that all MGSD students need to complete their PowerSchool Registration prior to the 1st day of school on August 10, 2022. If you have any issues with the registration system or have not received your registration email or letter, please contact our Accountability office at 704-658-2605.

The deadline for requesting bus transportation for the first day of school has passed. If you have not received your student's bus assignment or need to sign up for a bus assignment, please contact your student's school. Please note that you can sign up for bus transportation at any point in the school year; however, it will take approximately 3 to 4 days for the request to be fulfilled and a bus route to be assigned.
