A School Year to Remember!

We can certainly say that the 2020-2021 school year has been like no other in history! Students across the country from every type of school system whether in the city or rural areas had a very different school year. Some students were virtual, some hybrid (the mix of both in person and virtual) and some were in-person but all were treading on unfamiliar ground in one way or another!

As parents we had to navigate trying to keep students engaged, safe and hopefully successful no matter which type of school they were attending. After all, one thing I have learned in education is that no matter what our back ground, cultural differences or even race we all errantly want the same thing for our children. We want them to have success in life. In the world we live in today that translates into a successful education. We know that an education or the preparation for college or a career will definitely give our children a good start and a step up in the real world!

On the school side of the equation teachers were learning right along with students and parents about the virtual aspects of the "new normal" and living with covid-19. All in all we have all accomplished so much more than we could have ever anticipated. Although unfortunately some have experienced the loss of precious lives that many families and communities have had to endure, there were the blessings we were not expecting. Some of these hidden blessing were more time at home with loved ones, a sense of time slowing down and the innovative ways we have learned to communicate with others. We also experienced a heightened sense of care for others during this pandemic and saw our small community reach out to the needs of others in various ways.

It's been a year we will never forget with lessons and new skills we work hard to remember!

Parent & Family Feedback Survey!

The annual Parent & Family Feedback Survey is more convenient than ever to access this year! The QR code and shortened website link have been embeded in this article, sent home in a flyer, posted on the website, sent through remind, and hung up various places in town all in the effort to make the survey convenient and user friendly! Your input is extremely important to us and to the continuation of our federal funding. If you need any assistance with accessing the survey please contact Cindy Smith with the contact information below!

Transition Time

The major grade transitions for our children can be a concern for them and us as parents, especially when our students are going to a new school! The Georgia Department of Education has provided for us several resources for making the transition process smoother for families and students. All the materials are located on the Pelham City School website as well as the Georgia Dept. of Education website. Each one is accompanied by a video with a packet of material in both English and Spanish.

Virtual Parent Academy- Summer Slide!

The PCS Virtual Parent Academy Session 2 will be released, on May 20, 2021. This PA session will include helpful tips to helping prevent the summer slide, some great local resources to plug your children into, and a message from our new PCS Academic Literacy Coach, Mrs. Alicia Donaldson. Summer slide is definitely "a thing" and a serious concern for teachers as they try to help parents combat this without losing the intentionality of a true summer break! The PA will be posted on our website, on Facebook, sent through email and will be accessible on the website permanently. One of the best ways to promote family literacy this summer is to join our local libraries and their summer reading programs. Check out the flyers from Carnegie Public Library and Desoto Trail Library website to join the fun this summer and make sure to sign your student and yourself up!
