Virtual Labs
BIOCHEMISTRY
1. Acids, bases, and ph
Before you get started, it would be a good idea to read this short tutorial from Khan Academy. It will set you up for all of the experiments below. Seriously, look it over!
2. ph of common substances
Get your feet wet with acids and bases (not literally) right here while getting familiar with the pH chart. The pH slider table is found on the 3rd slide. The page you'll turn in is found here.
3. Acid/Base Kitchen
Here's a good way to learn how acids and bases react with one another while making a mess of the kitchen...a virtual kitchen. You didn't think we were going to let you mess up our actual kitchen, did you? C'mon.
4. BrainPop pH
Please visit this page from BrainPop about measuring pH. Go through the Virtual Lab on pH and meter calibration while taking careful notes about the content. If you do not have headphones be sure to click on the mute/speaker icon to enable closed captioning. When you are done, take the "Classic Quiz" and print/email the results to the teacher.
Next, visit this page dedicated to the pH of salsa (seriously). Go through the lab while taking careful notes and then take the "Classic Quiz" based on the lab and print/email your result to the teacher.
5. Enzyme-Controlled Reactions
Go to this page to see what effect (if any) pH has on enzyme function. Be sure that you test the substrates for each pH (reset button). Fill and print all tables as well as your answers to the journal questions.
6. Chem4Kids
No lab here, just information. This site should wrap up some of what you've done while touching on a wide range of biochemical topics. Read the first page and then click on the links that appear on the right hand side (cycles, carbohydrates etc.). Use this site and the links within to help you answer the "Biochemistry" Quiz that your teacher has provided.
