Thank you to Sarah Eggert, Emily Sweeney and all who helped make the graduation stage more gorgeous than ever. Every speaker knocked it out of the park and of course the photo slideshow made us tear up. Congratulations Comet Graduates 2023.🎓☄️💜
This year, National Arts Honors Society members created a mural painting for our LPS main Office. The process included planning, proposing, and creating the artwork, taking into account the location and community. Their idea was to reflect our unique connection to the Manitou islands and Fishtown. A cool color palette elicits a calm feeling, sometimes need in our office.
We are very thankful for our frame, constructed and donated by LPS parent, Mr. Travis Nelson. Thanks for you time and generosity. You helped us finish the project beautifully!
Good luck to our Track and Field Team running at STATES tomorrow! This is the very last sporting event of the year and we had such a sweet morning sending them off with a LFD escort!
The LEF Fun Run was even better in its second year! Classes excelled at hitting fundraising milestones and had a blast running the course and then getting cooled down by our above and beyond supportive Leland Fire Department!
"Thank goodness the Leland Fire Department was there to cool off our hot runners!" -Mrs. Suttmann
Leland’s First Academic Trip to North Manitou
Juniors in Mrs. Vann’s English III class ventured to North Manitou Island as a culminating activity of their US National Parks & Recitations unit. Because the Mishe-Mokwa ferry is grounded until the shore can be dredged later in the summer, students boarded The Bear, a 12-passenger boat captained by Geoff Niessink and Jimmy Munoz.
While on the island, Leland Public School teacher, Nick Seguin, who orchestrated the field trip, shared his knowledge of the island. Seguin also brought the students to the Leland Public School District 1-acre parcel established on the island. Students rang the historic school bell that was transplanted back to its home, adjacent to a lofty flagpole. Seguin explained the visionary plans for the school property, including a replica of the original schoolhouse that would serve as a bunkhouse or gathering place for students and teachers. Seguin checked on the existing water well in hopes that someday it will again function.
Students learned many interesting facts about the island from “The Legend”: Dave Hooper. Here are just a few nuggets of wisdom:
North Manitou is a national historic landmark - designated as a US Life Saving Station in 1998.
The US Life Saving mantra is “You always have to go out; you don’t always have to come back.”
Book recommendations for summer reading: 1. North Manitou Island: Between Sunrise and Sunset by Rita Rusco and 2. Tending a ‘Comfortable Wilderness’ by Eric McDonald
The Monte Carlo home has elements of Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired architectural design.
North Manitou Island is home to over 30 of the 72 pairs of endangered piping plovers. According to an NPS volunteer named Mary there must be 150+ pairs in order for the piping plovers to be taken off the endangered species list.
North Manitou Island is home to a variety of tree species including Norway maples, white walnut, and ash (there is no evidence of the invasive emerald ash borer).
We extend a heartfelt thanks to the Leland Education Foundation for helping to fund a portion of Leland Public School’s first academic field trip to North Manitou Island.
LPS Parent and Cafe Staff Carol Shipley revives post construction unused green space! It is looking amazing thank you to all the helpers!
Thank you to Dr. Nan for coordinating this middle school Spanish project! Students' work is on display at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. The fairy house and door exhibit is free, open to the public, and lasts until Labor Day.

Today way the LEF fun run!
Today is was the day! We can’t wait to celebrate with you and have some fun!
And big news, students . . . Tonight we are having a BONUS NIGHT for donations! That means you can still get MORE DONATIONS tonight and have your parents or whoever you live with log them onto MYBOOSTER.COM! Thank you for helping our school! See you soon!
After two years of all students being allowed to eat school meals for free, due to COVID, the
USDA removed the waiver and families that don’t meet strict income thresholds are now
responsible for paying for their meals again. Many families are facing growing negative account
balances, and simply do not have the means to pay for their children’s breakfasts and lunches.
Leland Public School’s Food Service Department has an Angel Account set up for anyone who
would like to make a donation to help students with meal debt. With your help, we know that we
can make a big difference! By making an anonymous monetary donation to the Angel Account,
you would become one of our angels, and make a difference in the life of a student today.
Donating is simple:
1. Go to https://leland.familyportal.cloud/
2. Click “my account,” and log in with your email address and password. If you do not have
a family portal account follow the prompts to set one up.
3. Under “My Account” click “Add Person”
4. ID Number: 7777
First Name: Account
Last Name: Angel
Birthdate: 01/01/2020
5. Under “My Account” click “Deposit” and follow the prompts.
The funds will immediately be available for the food service department to disperse to those
families in the most need.
We can also take a cash or check (made payable to Leland Public School) donation that can be
dropped off at the main office.
You can email Food Service Director Shawna Seitter @ sseitter@lelandschool.com if you are
interested in donating your leftover lunch balance at the end of the school year!
The food service department sends you a big THANK YOU for considering helping our students in need.

Move This World - Social Emotional Learning
Dear Families,
To support our students’ social emotional needs and mental health, we are using a video-based social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum from Move This World. I’m excited to share that you’ll be able to access this helpful curriculum at home, too!
Social emotional learning is how students learn to process and manage emotions as well as important social skills. It includes everything from goal setting to stress management, and it provides both children and adults with tools they can use to express themselves authentically and safely. SEL helps students build healthy relationships, communicate effectively, and live a meaningful life.
Below, you’ll find log in instructions:
Visit: sel.movethisworld.com
Username: leland.family
Password: movethisworld
Practicing social emotional learning at home can help your students:
Identity and recognize their emotions.
Build critical social skills.
Connect with themselves and others.
Navigate challenges they may be experiencing.
Adjust to the new school year.
Move This World is a social emotional learning program delivered through an extensive online library of PreK-12 videos and resources rooted in creative expression that help students, teachers and staff develop a common language to improve communication and build trust. We’re so glad that you’ll be able to access Move This World videos and resources at home, and hope they are helpful for your students and family.
Learn more about how it works here.
Please let us know if you have any additional questions!

3rd Stepping into Girls Who Code is on for Tuesday, June 6th, from 5:00-7:00 pm at 20 Fathoms in Traverse City. Business professionals and educators are so excited to again share coding and tech concepts with students!
Computer Science (CS) and technology are growing fields that have been largely male-dominated. This event is to encourage girls and non-binary students to explore their interests in this field. It will be a night of food, CS, computational thinking, and fun for students in 5th-8th grades. The activities will include "plugged" and "unplugged" opportunities for learning about coding, computational thinking, and technology. We will also have a few area local professionals to share about what they do and how they got into their jobs.
