This week we will begin our first unit over numbers and operations. Students will be split into groups to launch the unit and we will be having a test on Friday, September 8th.

This week we will begin our first unit over rational numbers called We Scream for Ice Cream. Students will use their knowledge of rational numbers to create an ice cream recipe that they will have the opportunity to make on September 11th. We will be testing over rational numbers on Friday, September 15th.

Students spent the first week getting acquainted and unpacking the technology standards that we will be learning and building upon. This week we will explore the makerspace and start the design process for projects we will present at #globalmakerday on October 24th.

Design & Modeling: We will be talking about the engineering design process, how it works, why we use it, and how it can be used in everyday life.
Energy and Environment: We will discuss the different types of environmental energies, what renewable energies are, and how we can use them.

This week in Comic Book we are going to begin our first STEAM Framework Unit: Understanding Comics. In this unit students will discover exactly what a comic is and what it isn’t and in the process students will make their own alter-ego superhero. We’ll begin by defining comics, and finding examples of comics in everyday life. Then we’ll learn the basics of storytelling and we’ll apply these principles to our first superhero comic.

Art Kits - Students will need specific materials for this class that can be purchased together as an art kit. Please bring cash or check of $30 payable to STEAM middle school for the kit. Art kits will be one sale from August 21 - September 8. A list of all materials in the art kit is available in the syllabus
