Adult and Community Education
"In The Know" 2/21/2017
Continually Improving Through Reflection
In the last few years there has been discussion in Adult Education about integrated team-teaching with technical programs. Washington, Illinois, and now Florida are addressing the broadening scope of Adult Education beyond the traditional GED and general academic instruction into areas of digital literacy, workforce preparation, career planning, as well as career and technical education. Two weeks ago many of us participated in the ABE workshop that allowed us the opportunity to understand that the ESOL classroom as we know it is evolving to incorporate more than just language acquisition because our students expect more than just language.
Team-teaching within the Adult Education can provide a variety of advantages to instructing adults and accomplishing student goals. Instructors and students benefit from exposure to a variety of teaching styles, personalities, and educational perspectives. This year we have been able to reintroduce team teaching in our ABE/GED program at LWTC where Israel Caraza and Lionel L’Esperance share a classroom and students. Our ESOL & ELCATE programs at LWTC have also started team teaching by sharing students from one class to another to best meet the needs of the learners and start the transition to their next goals. Lin Rhines who teaches our advanced ESOL level in the evening at LWTC has also just started exploring co-teaching in the Facials Specialty Program. Within the Facials Specialty Program Lynn is able to brings her experience of second language acquisition and contextualize the key content to support the learning needs of second language learners.
As we continue to explore the arena of contextualized learning and bridging our students to their next learning goals we know that team teaching will be a means to achieving success with our students. For those who are interested in exploring this arena Florida IPDAE discusses the ways in which adult education instructors can implement team-teaching practices to the benefit of students and teachers alike. - We had another great turn-out for a professional development workshop this week. Participants from Southwest Florida, including proctors, instructors, coordinators, and support staff from CCPS, were instructed on the proper administration and interpretation of the TABE. Congratulations to all who attended and are now TABE certified.
- "Communication-Collaboration” site visits will resume this week beginning at BCH on Thursday evening. Along with Christine, we will visit each site and meet with instructors during planning to share best practices and important information. Teachers will receive an email invite prior to our visits—we look forward to each visit (5:30-6:00).
- Coordinators and support staff will begin looking at student hours and scheduling those who are eligible to be tested. Students may be tested before the end of this session but they will not change classes until the start of session II (after spring break). Instructors, please let your students know that they will have an opportunity to test after Spring Break as soon as they accumulate the eligible hours.
