9th grade Transition to the HS
9th Grade Review
PSAT 8/9
On 10/19, all 9th grade students were administered the PSAT 8/9. This is an assessment that is closely aligned to the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, and PSAT 10. It consists of Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing and Math questions. The benefit of taking the test is that it establishes a baseline for students as they enter HS and begin preparing for college and career readiness. It also provides students with better access to data and personalized study through Khan Academy resources khanacademy.org/sat. Students will be able to access their results online through College Board www.collegeboard.com in early December. A flyer with more detailed information was distributed to students through their English classes and also through ecommunicator.
PSAT
On 9/13, counselors visited 10th grade English classes to discuss the importance of registering for the PSAT. The PSAT is an important test in planning for post-secondary education and every college bound student should take the PSAT in both 10th and 11th grade. It measures the same skills and has the same format as the SAT. Students will be able to access results online through College Board www.collegeboard.com beginning December 12, 2016. At this time counselors will meet with students to discuss their score reports and encouraged to link their scores to Khan Academy www.khanacademy.org/sat for free individualized SAT prep. A flyer with PSAT registration information was distributed in classes and also posted to ecommunicator.
Khan Academy
Khan Academy has khanacademy.org/sat partnered with the College Board to provide free individualized test prep for students preparing for the PSAT 8/9, PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT. It is a free website, allowing students the benefit of practicing 24/7 on demand.

All ninth grade students will be introduced to Naviance http://succeed.naviance.com, a college and career planning website, through their health classes in December. Students will be given a log in and complete the "Do What You Are Personality Assessment" which is linked to the Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory. This assessment is designed to help students identify their basic personality type and how this can be linked to possible careers.
All tenth grade students will also complete the "Do What you are Personality Assessment", linking students to potential career choices. Students scheduled for health Semester 1 will complete this in December and students scheduled for health in semester 2 will complete this in January.
Both 9th and 10th grade students will be encouraged to utilize Naviance at home with their families, to continue to explore career options, create a resume, and to begin investigating potential college choices.
