Iron Horse Community Weekly Update
Friday, December 6, 2019
December is here!
I cannot believe that we are in the final weeks of the 1st semester, and that 2019 is coming to a close! We had a very busy and challenging November, and we are in the midst a busy December.
The challenges continued with a partial power outage on campus yesterday. I want to take a moment to thank our staff, who continues to impress me with their professionalism and flexibility. Their poise set the tone for our students who made the adjustments well. PG&E restored power to the campus fully a little after 10am and we continued the day with great teaching and learning.
In the next couple weeks we will have a parent education night, 4 musical performances, 2 winter concerts, and the conclusion of our annual Sister School Toy Drive before we head into the Winter Break!
We appreciate all of your support this school year thus far, and look forward to finishing the semester strong!
Food Drive Results
Thank you to all of the families that were able to donate to our can food drive in November. As a result of your generosity we were able to collect 1,312 pounds of food! That equates to 1,093 meals for families in community! I also want to extend the gratitude of the Contra Costa & Solano Food Bank, who count on us to help support families in need.
Parent Education Night Event
Iron Horse Middle School is excited to invite all SRVUSD middle school parents to a
Social Emotional Learning event: Developing the Skills to Navigate Life,
presented by Ms. Stacy Williams
Wednesday, December 11, 7:00-8:30pm Iron Horse Middle SchoolMultipurpose Room (MPR)
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. (excerpt from CASEL). Stacy will guide us through an interactive presentation on how we as parents can understand and apply the knowledge of SEL. into our own lives, better enabling us to help our children develop the best skills to navigate this ever changing world.
Stacy Williams is a Senior Learning & Development Manager, specializing in people management and building training programs, as well as the founder of Neverstoplearning.com. Stacy has conducted one of the three professional development sessions on Social Emotional Learning for the staff at Iron Horse Middle school and has graciously offered to share her knowledge with the school community.

Annual Sister-School Toy Drive
Every year, the Iron Horse community collects toys for all students at our sister school at Riverside Elementary. Leadership will be collecting new, unopened toys from December 2 through December 13th and will wrap each gift for you. Toys, board games, sports equipment, and art supplies are favorites for the kids but every donation makes a difference.
Leadership students will be collecting toys daily during 7th period, your donations would be greatly appreciated. We are asking for the following donations as assigned by grade level:
6th graders – Bring in toys for children ages 5-7.
7th graders- Bring in toys for children ages 8-10.
8th graders- Bring in toys for children ages 11 and up.
Geography Bee Postponed
After School Math Help
Next Tuesday, December 10, Mrs. Pacheco is hosting in room 202.
ASB Fundraiser - Ready, Set, Fund
In place of our annual Student Body Magazine and Cookie Dough fundraiser we are pleased to announce the Associated Student Body's new completely online virtual fundraiser going on now!
The more online supporters students can get to signup, the more funds we get to help support our student body programs.....and... you can earn these great prizes!
Please consider supporting by clicking the below link.
Traffic Update
We are also asking that families refrain from using the Transit Center as a pick-up/drop-off location. It makes for an unsafe situation with transit buses along with a high volume of parent traffic attempting to enter/exit the Transit Center at the same time.
Thank you for your support.
Tutorial
Please remind your students to sign up the day before tutorial (Monday and Wednesday) at the latest. Thank you.
AVID Tutors Needed
AVID needs regular Tuesday and Thursday volunteers to act as "tutors" during 2nd and/or 3rd period!
College students, retirees, parents, and grandparents all make excellent tutors!
AVID tutorial volunteers do NOT need to be experts in a subject, they just need to be enthusiastic and willing to facilitate the inquiry process for a small group.
AVID tutors will be trained by the district prior to beginning work in the classroom. This training will help give tutors the confidence and skills needed to help out students succeed! All volunteers must be cleared to volunteer on campus (Level 1) through the district's Be a Mentor program.
