Jim Crow Law Information
Jackie Robinson and Jim Crow
When Jackie was brought up from the minor leagues to play for the Dodgers the majority of people and press accepted him however there were still many racists that believed he didn’t belong. He encountered this throughout his career. He knew pitchers would throw balls at his head and players would try to spike him but he continued to play his hardest. While he was on the road with his team many hotels refused to let him stay with his teammates and restaurants wouldn't serve him food. After the Dodgers went to these places, many of them would eventually integrate and accommodated to blacks also.
Jim Crow
After the Civil War, millions of formerly enslaved African Americans hoped to join the larger society as full and equal citizens. Although some white Americans welcomed them, others used people’s ignorance, racism, and self-interest to sustain and spread racial divisions. By 1900, new laws and old customs in the North and the South had created a segregated society that condemned Americans of color to second-class citizenship.
