Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1965. He was the oldest of five children. His family was moved to Paris later on in 1976 because his father's job. His father worked as a diplomat for the Afghan Foreign Ministry. While his mother was a history teacher at a high school.

Khaled and his family were ready to move back to their homeland when Kabul got invaded by the Soviet Army. They went on to San Jose, California.

After high school, Khaled Hosseini, went to get a bachelor's degree in biology at Santa Clara University. In 1993 he earned his medical degree at the University of California.

It was while he was practicing medicine, Khaled started writing his first book The Kite Runner in March 2001.
