A message from KMSC's president...
FINALLY, a summer weekend that feels like summer!
I would like to offer some safety reminders:
The staff are responsible for the safety of everyone in the main pool. When in the lifeguard chair they are constantly scanning the entire pool. They cannot focus all of their attention on a particular individual. Parents, this means that YOU must keep an eye on your child when s/he is in the water.
If your child is using a floatation device because s/he cannot swim independently, then you must be in the water with your child and within arm's reach.
There is not a lifeguard stationed at the baby pool. Parents are wholly responsible for supervising their children while in the baby pool area. The gates must be kept closed at all times. Do not place deck chairs in the baby pool, because they could damage the pool's white coat...that was replaced two years ago at a cost of $5,000.
Before allowing your children to use the slide or diving board, please review with them the rules of use. If you would like for a guard to go over the rules, please go to the office to ask a staff member.
Last, but not least:
We expect that our staff will be courteous and treat members with respect. We also expect that our members will be courteous and treat the staff with respect, and that members will promptly comply with staff members' requests. Following staff members' instructions is for everyone's safety and everyone's enjoyment of the pool.

Swim Team Kicks Off Season at Home
Although our team didn't win, the swimmers posted many fine race times (click on the video link below for one example). You will be able to find all the team's meet results this summer on the team's bulletin board by the ladies room entrance.
The pool closes early (at 4 p.m.) for weekday home meets. Two more are scheduled for Thursday, July 5th, against the Rockville Rays, and Wednesday, July 11th, against the Forest Knolls Seahawks.
The pool also opens late (12 p.m.) when the team as home morning meets on the weekend. There's only one scheduled this summer, July 8th, against the Twinbrook Ducks.
The team is small and still recruiting. To register your swimmers for all the fun that the team is planning, like its poolside pep rallies (see photo), go to the team's website at https://kangaroos.swimtopia.com/ .
If your swimmer isn't ready yet for competition, take advantage of our swim lesson program! The lessons are offered by our lifeguards through the swim team. For more information, go to https://kangaroos.swimtopia.com/lessons .
Wayback Machine
We used the Wayback Machine to come up with this treasure from the '70s (see photo above).
This team patch was mailed to me from Arizona after former 'Roo, Nancy Stolintz Hoetker, saw a post about the pool in the Kemp Mill/Wheaton Facebook group. When I asked her if she was on the team in the years before the pool's high dive was removed (see color team photo below, which I believe is from 1982), she expressed surprise to learn it was gone! Apparently, the high dive was added after the pool was built, too!
Our conversation sparked reminisces from other former 'Roos around the country.
I was especially surprised to learn from Lisa Clesner the the team mascot wasn't always a kangaroo! She said there was no mascot in the beginning.
"[The] year we decided on the name Kemp Mill Kangaroos[,] ... my family found a big (truly big) stuffed kangaroo[,] which [we used as ] our mascot," Lisa said. "Our team sign initially was a sheet with ... a drawing of a kangaroo [on it]." I wonder when that was?
Sue Rowland Dietrich contributed the black-and-white team photo (below), which got a lot of people trying to remember who was who. She said it was taken in the early '70s. Maybe you can identify some of the people in these photos? Maybe you're in one of the photos!
I'd like to share more memories from our long-time members and former members.
If you've been a pool member or know someone who has been a pool member for 25 years or more, I'd like to talk with you! Please email your name and phone number to me at kempmillswimclubsecy@gmail.com!
And if you have old photos to share of the team or the pool, I would love to show them off here. Please let me know!
The patch is going to be placed in the team's trophy case in the front office.
