Solon High School

Monthly Update-December 2019

Let's Finish Strong

We are nearly there. Only three weeks left and we will be halfway through our year! It has absolutely flown by and we are so grateful for all of the support the last five months. The transition for me, as principal, has been successful because of the staff collaboration, building structures, parent support, and resources we have in Solon. Thank you all for making this a great fall so far!

For those of you that like to stay as connected as possible, please remember to take note of a few of the updates to the district's social media presence, and follow the hashtag #solongstrong.

Please review the cell phone policy (established in August 2016) with your child at some point this week. We are going to make sure this is implemented with fidelity in all classrooms to ensure focus and engagement is at its best. We rarely have issues with students using cell phones inappropriately, but want to make sure that each student is set for success in all classrooms. If you have any questions about this, please let me know.

Finally, be on the lookout for your son or daughter's ISASP results as they will be coming home with your child on December 11th. Thanks for your continued support!

From the Counseling office....

Student Stress/Anxiety

At Solon HS, we have three weeks until the end of the semester. Besides the focus on academics (e.g. teachers pushing to deliver content before the end of the quarter, assessing student learning, etc.), our winter sports season is now in full swing. On top of this, we are also approaching the holiday season. As a result, this time of year can be stressful for students as they try to balance and prioritize each of these things.

For many students, when they experience either stressful situations or anxiety, their thoughts become muddled. They might be less clear in their thinking. My primary role is to assist students with their social/emotional development. And within that role, my number one job is to listen and help students manage stressful and anxious situations (i.e. see things more clearly). Parents, if you sense your student is a bit more stressed, I want you to know that I can help. You can reach me either by phone (624-3401 ext. 1117) or email (

Spring 2020 Job Shadow Opportunity.

The Workplace Learning Connection (WLC) will be offering job shadow opportunities to students in grades 10 - 12 for second semester. Each of these job shadow opportunities will be in a group format (e.g. 10-12 students). Solon HS students who have completed a job shadow experience continually report that their job shadow experience was valuable in helping decide a career plan. The portal will open on January 6th and close on January 24th. The website will have all the new job shadow options posted by December 20th.

Mr. Thompson is continuing to update his website. You can access the High School Website here.

DESSA Screener - School counselors have been working on developing a comprehensive program to meet the social and emotional learning (SEL) needs of our students K-12. Research has shown that mastery of these skills is directly correlated to future success across all endeavors. Recently, the district used the DESSA screener as a tool to assess students’ SEL skills. The DESSA is neither a mental health screener nor a diagnostic tool to identify mental health disorders. The DESSA is used to determine SEL skill acquisition and development as well as identify strategies to help students gain the social and emotional skills they need to be most successful in school. In addition, the data collected from the DESSA is being used to inform system-wide structures and supports to be implemented throughout the district’s School Counseling program.
