Kids Book Choice Awards
What is Kids' Choice?
The Kids’ Choice Award was launched in the fall of 2001, to increase cooperation between public and school libraries and to encourage children in grades 4, 5 and 6 to read. Students get one vote for every three books they read on the list.

- March 5 th and 19 th

- The goal of our Youth Program is that as future young leaders in Pewaukee, you are able to:
- Gain an awareness of the need for community service, civic participation and philanthropy
- Increase familiarity with areas in Pewaukee beyond your immediate neighbourhood and school
- Interact with adult leaders in private, public and non-profit sectors

- academic and professional successes
Why would I want to do this?
- I am interested in building leadership skills.
- I care about issues affecting those in need and want to have an impact on my community.
- I have community service hours to complete and this would be great!
- I want to meet new, fun people!
- What else do I need to know?
Meetings will be held at Horizon School in room 134 from 3:45-5:00 PM on dates specified above. The program is limited to 25, fifth grade students who submit their applications for consideration. Meetings are mandatory for participants unless a written request is submitted prior to each session.

Language Arts
Our Unit 2 focus for reading works on tackling complex text while reading nonfiction. We are spending time learning how main ideas and supporting details help us write a summary about what we have read. Your students are preparing to present what they have learned about a self-selected subject. Reading informational text is hard work. It is a skill they will use for the rest of their lives. Our 5th graders are working hard in this unit.
We will begin a new spelling curriculum in class in the next week or so. I am excited to see the growth.
Have a great weekend.
Social Studies
In a Social Studies students took on the role of underwater archaeologists to examine objects from an explorer's sunken ship and categorize them as navigation tools, motives for exploration, or new products from the Americas. They also completed an open notebook quiz on this information. Students will bring these home this weekend and grades will be posted on Skyward.
To introduce our next unit, students were given the task to create their own colony. Working in groups they were given specific tasks to complete in order
- Determine what supplies to bring
- Identify which members you would take over to the New World
- Choose a site to start your settlement
- Order the tasks you could complete first, second, etc.
Math
- Played Texas Hold'em as a review game for the test
- Completed the Unit 2 assessment- students will get this back next week in their Friday Folders
- Completed a Think Tank Thursday activity
Booker's math class played the Game of Life to review their addition and subtraction of decimals. Ask your child what job they got, which house they bought, or car they drove! They really enjoyed this activity.
