Art Action with Mr. Daniel
We are "Ready, Set, Go!!" as we move towards the spring of the year in art.
Our fourth grade artists are using their creative ability, skill-set, proportion, color schemes and watercolor techniques, to develop portraits of their "Favorite Alabamian." Our fourth graders have been exploring the legacy of several famous Alabamians during Social Studies class. We will explore a variety of color schemes and watercolor techniques to paint vivid interpretations of several of these famous individuals in portrait form. We will also explore the works of Winslow Homer.
Our fifth grade artists are using the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, to produce vivid collages titled: "A Walk In The Forest" (or Foreground, Middle-ground, Background Collage). We will also use overlapping, visual texture, a variety of color schemes, and construction paper to produce these compositions. The works of Man Ray will be explored during this project.

Media Memos with Mrs. McGilberry
Thank you to all who helped with the book fair last week! I couldn’t have done it without you. Also, a big thank you to all who purchased books. We made about $6,000 which is a great profit for our library. I will be using this money to buy additional robots and resources for our stations. More than the money, I want to thank you for all of the books that you bought for our students. You have helped me in encouraging our students to love reading!
As for the library lessons, we have finished our research projects and Clips videos. It has been a great learning project for us all. The videos are all available on my library webpage. I know that your student would love to show you their hard work!
Music Messages from Mrs. Oprandy
Fifth grade students learned to play the “KidStix." “KidStix” uses unconventional materials to create four different instruments, the Beat Board (cutting board), Crash Can (large can from the cafeteria), Tambourine, and Stick Clicks (hitting drum sticks together). When playing the instruments on their Stick Station, student grow in their understanding of form, steady beat, rhythmic subdivision, and reading music scores. It also helps to introduce students to a wide variety of music pieces and composers. Students also got creative as they worked with a small group to create and perform their own movements to the song “Dum Dum Dada."
Fourth grade students focused on making music (not just sound) when playing the recorder this past month. They took everything they had learned over the years about rhythm and notation and put it all together to successfully read music while playing the recorder. They learned to play the notes B, A, and G on the recorder, so they’re ready for Recorder Karate. Recorder Karate for fourth graders begins March 16. Students must be able to play the Recorder Karate songs with all correct notes, all correct rhythms, steady beat, and a good sound in order to earn belts.
Venture Visit with Mrs. Price
Fifth graders are currently testing their knowledge of gravity as they build and test parachutes that will carry a hard boiled egg without cracking. Fourth graders are building, exploring and excavating rock layers.
It’s certainly a busy time in Venture!!
The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
In Guidance class we are finishing up with our career development lessons. Students have learned what a career is and the major factors in choosing a career in their future. Education is continuously being stressed and graduating high school is a must! Students are to be proactive as they get to choose how far they decide to go with their educational pursuit after high school. The sky is the limit; please challenge your students to give their best every day in school. The higher your expectations, the better results you will see.
We will begin our lessons on Diversity in March. The concept refers to understanding that each individual is unique/special, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. Cultural diversity is important because our country, workplaces, and schools increasingly consist of various cultural, racial, and ethnic groups. We can learn from one another, but first we must have a level of understanding about each other in order to facilitate collaboration and cooperation. Please spend some time talking about diversity with your children.
Quote of the month:
Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.
