South Texas Challenge Mock Trial Team
10th Annual First-Year Moot Court Competition Results
The Board of Advocates ran a smooth competition over the last three days. A big thank you to Billy Phillippi and Chris Baldwin for overseeing the festivities.
Shirley Arreola-Kern and Matthew Parden were semi-finalists. Burton Walker, Jordan Self, Nicholas Napolitano and Coy Morgan were quarter-finalists.
Congratulations to all that participated! The future looks very bright!

JPILF elections will be held Tuesday, April 19 at 11:30 am in Room 114. If you are interested in running for a JPILF Board position please email Aaron Bern at aaron.bern@faulkner.edu no later than Monday, April 18 at 5 p.m. Board positions to be elected are President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Additionally, we will be electing a (rising) 2L Representative to the Montgomery Volunteer Lawyer Program. Again, if you wish to run for JPILF's Executive Board or 2L MVLP please contact Aaron Bern. Interpreting 101
Interpreting 101:
Skill Building and Ethics for Interpreters
Montgomery, AL - May 2016
A two day hands-on training for interpreters, bilingual staff, and community members on the basics of interpreting, for both beginning and experienced interpreters.

This workshop will include:
- General overview of interpreting in medical, court and community settings
- Review of modes of interpretation: consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation
- Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for legal, medical,
and community / school interpreting - Skill building and note taking for consecutive interpretation
- Consecutive interpreting practice through role plays
- Options for certification, interpreter associations, and additional resources

This workshop is open to interpreters in any language and will be conducted in English. Participants should be fully bilingual in English and their target language. No previous interpreting experience is required. Space is limited so early registration is encouraged.
Cost for the two day training is $190 if you register before May 1st; $220 May 2 - May 19.
Lunch for both days is included in the cost. Participants who complete the entire training will receive a certificate of completion from Deep South Language Services.
About the Instructors:
Melissa Fridlin Murrell has more than 15 years experience as an interpreter in nonprofit, medical, and legal settings. A native of the Southeastern US, she has a BA in Latin American Studies, has lived and worked in Mexico and Central America, and holds a Certificate in Healthcare Interpreting from Samford University in Birmingham, AL. She is conditionally certified as an Alabama Court Interpreter, works as a full time freelance interpreter and interpreter trainer, and is the owner of Deep South Language Services.
Kenton Myers, CMI is a Certified Medical Interpreter and a graduate of the Healthcare Interpreter Training program at Samford University in Birmingham, AL. Kenton is a full time freelance interpreter who works in hospital, clinic, court, and social services settings. He is currently the instructor for the Healthcare Interpreter Training program in Birmingham, which prepares interpreters to take national medical certification exams, and is the owner of M&N Language Services in Birmingham, AL.

Montgomery County VLP
The Montgomery County VLP sponsors a FREE community legal clinic on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month, from 3:00 pm-5:30 pm. The clinic is held at the Head Start Educational Building at 1100 Adams Avenue in Montgomery.
Gain hands-on experience and network with local lawyers as they answer legal questions about a variety of civil legal issues. Law student volunteers assist with client intake and observe meetings between lawyers and clients (with client consent). For more information, visit http://www.montgomeryvlp.org.

Clerk position in Montgomery-Auburn
Local two person law firm in Montgomery and Auburn has a temporary clerk position from May-mid August for a 2L who will be a 3L in the Fall. Areas of practice are personal injury, family law and firefighter personnel law.
