Suicide Gatekeeper Training
Essential Information for School Personnel
Join us for one or both of the following ...
Morning Session (9:00 - 11:30 AM): Suicide Gatekeeper Training: Essential Information for all School Personnel
Anyone who spends time with young people understands the importance of recognizing the risk factors and warning signs for suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-24, and the leading cause of death for children ages 10-14. Suicide deaths, however, represent only the extreme end of the continuum. There are an estimated 5,240 suicide attempts each day by young people in grades 7-12.
The good news is that with a few hours of training, we can help people to recognize the risk factor for suicide, to learn how to engage with empathy, to practice ways to ask directly about suicide, to learn methods to communicate hope, and to give very clear methods for accessing resources. This training is intended for all school and community personnel. The presenters will teach a specific strategy for learning how to intervene that has the potential to save lives.
Afternoon Session (12:30 - 3:00 PM): Suicide Assessment, Intervention, and Postvention
The afternoon session is an advanced training for mental health professionals within the school setting. The presenters will provide concrete, practical information on suicide risk assessment and intervention. Participants will be given resources to conduct culturally and developmentally appropriate risk assessments as well as intervention guidelines to coordinate strategies with treatment providers in the community for working with suicidal students, including reintegration strategies into the school after a hospitalization. Strategies for postvention that minimize contagion will also be included.
Target audience: School Counselors, Building or Central Office Administrators , School Social Workers, School Mental Health Specialists, Classroom Teachers
Lunch will be provided to all participants.
Participants attending both AM and PM sessions will receive 5.5 contact hours. Participants attending AM session only will receive 2.5 contact hours and are invited to stay for lunch from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM.
This workshop is FREE for North Point staff and all educators from NPESC's client districts. Registration for non-client districts is $25 per person payable to NPESC. Space is limited to 150 participants.
