News from the HEMS Library
Whew...October was a fast month in the HEMS library!
The preschool classes visited this week to hear books matching their unit/theme.
Kindergarten students started checking out a book each week from the library collection. They are doing a wonderful job remembering what Dr. Save-A-Book taught them about being safe, respectful, and responsible with their library books. Students are learning to distinguish between fiction and nonfiction books in our library as they choose the type of book that they would like to check out each week.
Grades 1&2 have been focused on selecting books that are "just right" for them. We read Goldisocks and the Three Libearians by Jackie Mims Hopkins to learn how to do the five finger test to see if a book is the right size (reading level) and we also had a lesson on finding books that are "right for the job" (interesting, readable, enjoyable, informative). Ask your first or second grader about helping Mrs. Simpson find the perfect running shoe. We will continue this unit in November by focusing on the features of a book that students can use to determine if it is "right for the job" (front cover, back cover/blurb, inside jacket cover, table of contents, index, glossary, etc.).
In grades 3-5 we have been learning what it means to be a digital citizen. Please see the resources linked below to see the content/information that we have been covering in this unit which will continue in the month of November. I have been adding both content used as well as resources for teachers and parents to the Be Safe Online page of the library website. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding our digital citizenship curriculum.
