The Guilded Age

Immigrants came through many different countries ariving through Ellis Island. They lived in one room apartments called Tenements and some worked in Sweatshops, small unventilated rooms.

Many who arrived here were hit with Culture shock and had to live with their same country-folk in Ethnic Ghettos. America quickly turned into a Melting pot, a society mixed with people from different countries. Jacob Riis worte a book called How the Other Half Lives, which showed the wealthy people the filth these immigrants lived in and their living and working conditions.
