Third Grade News

January Curriculum Update

Reading Workshop

Third grade will begin a unit called: "Following Characters into Meaning." The students will study character traits such as: looking at how other characters treat him/her and explain how that can give us insight into the different layers of that character or the meaning of the book. We will read a variety of text to enhance this skill and write about it in writing workshop. One major character we will be analyzing is Opal from "Because of Winn Dixie" through a whole class read aloud and activities.

Writing Workshop

The students are published authors once again! We had our nonfiction writing celebration in which the students showed off their expert topics and paragraph writing skills. We are starting our third unit, Literary Essay. The students will utilize graphic organizers as they zoom in on the main characters of their independent books. By the end of this unit, they will write an essay supporting their thoughts through examples from their books. We will once again begin our work in our writer's notebooks and draft our way to a published piece. This will be their very first time writing a literary essay! We can't wait to see the finished product.

We are currently reviewing our multiplication and division facts and two and three digit multiplication and division. The students should continue to practice these facts throughout the second half of the year, especially the 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s.

Social Studies

Third grade presented their "country in a bag" project just before break. Teachers were so impressed with the knowledge students gained through their research of their chosen European country. This month we will focus on Africa beginning with a general overview of the continent including climate, major geographical features, etc. Then we will zoom in on Tanzania and deeply explore just one small region of this vast continent. The students will be charged with creating a class alphabet book as their summative piece.
