We can't be-leaf our eyes! For the past 12 years, District 123 has organized a Community Leaf Raking Event brining together families and students for a community service opportunity. This year over 120 volunteers worked to rake, collect and compost leaves from the yards of senior residents in the Oak Lawn and Hometown communities that would otherwise not be able to rake themselves.
Last Thursday November 10, second graders visited the Oak Lawn Public Library. Second grade was very excited as they got to listen and learn more about Oak Lawn's history and community helpers. Students recently learned about what makes a community through their Social studies unit.
On Thursday November 10, 2022, Hometown Elementary held its annual Veteran's Day assembly. Local Veterans were invited to attend this program honoring their time served in either the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. The program was led by principal Amanda Bencik, and included contributions from each grade level.
On Friday, November 11th, Kolmar 2nd graders took a field trip to the Morton Arboretum. The field trip was connected to both their Literacy unit on changing trees/weather and their Science unit on animal and plant relationships. In the morning they had a tour guide showing them around and teaching them all sorts of amazing things!
On Veterans Day, Sward Elementary School hosted an assembly honoring the brave men and women who have served in the armed forces. Mrs. Glikis and the Sward chorus provided lovely music and successfully engaged the audience to sing along. The guests of honor brought such joy to our Sward students and staff.
Every year, Mr. Fanjoy and Mr. Lazzarotto run the Kids Heart Challenge for the students at Hannum Elementary. Students learn about whole body wellness and how to improve their health. They also learn how to build better character and how to spread kindness.
With a few weeks left in our girls basketball season, our Mustangs are learning and improving every game. After the Lady Mustang played against Liberty yesterday, Coach Carmody and her 6/7 grade team have a current record of 7-1, and Ms. Danos and her 8th grade team are currently 6-2.
