MATH PROBLEMS OF THE MONTH
FROM THE MYP COORDINATOR
Hello Eagle Family,
It gives me immense pleasure to welcome the first batch of students to the Middle Years Programme (MYP). This year, the Eagles have soared in spite of adverse winds and reached a new height. The resilience and courage exhibited by our MYP students during these challenging times have shown their dedication to the programme and their education. They have risen to the occasion and are proving themselves to be responsible, independent, and courageous learners every day.
The MYP is a wonderful and rigorous curriculum that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. The MYP’s approach to teaching and learning is to help students develop their personal understanding, and their emerging sense of self and responsibility in their community. Using global contexts, MYP students develop an understanding of their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet through developmentally appropriate explorations of identities and relationships, personal and cultural expression, orientations in space and time, scientific and technical innovation, fairness and development, and globalization and sustainability.
The MYP therefore creates opportunities for all not only to become successful but also to care for others, take the service-learning to their heart, and blossom into globally responsible citizens. It is one of the most acclaimed and sought-after curricula in the world.
We, at Cornerstone International Academy, are committed to maintaining the standard of true international education by opening this new chapter in our pursuit of excellence.

Go Green by Lawrence Ashun, MYP Year 1
Going green doesn’t have to be intimidating, and can even save you money.
Why you should go green: Going green, no matter what anyone tells you, is an individual choice. Everyone may have a different reason to go green. The world needs all the help it can get. So, make a difference now and today.
Imagine Math by Heather Amos, MYP Year 1
Mathematics is not just about dry numbers and steps. It can become fun when we allow our imagination to soar.
WORLD PEACE by Samira Abdulai, MYP Year 2
My artwork signifies peace around us. I drew my idea on a piece of paper and colored it. I drew the earth to signify the world, which to me is a wheel or vehicle that signifies peace as well as the olive branches.
Dónde vives
Meanwhile, our learning of languages has become fascinating and oh, sometimes confusing. We learned about various countries around the world whose people speak Spanish. We looked at their clothes, food, and festivals. Here is a collage of our work.

FROM THE MEDIA STUDIES CENTER
We appreciate your efforts as you keep learning at home through these unprecedented times. There is no doubt we are continuing to adjust to this reality together. Now more than ever it is critically important to keep yourself engaged in reading as required of true inquirers. For that reason, we are excited to share a new e-resource center, a digital destination to enable easy access to electronic resources needed for your inquiry and pleasure reading. Enjoy the convenience and comfort of learning without limit by exploring these great titles and many more in our e-library.
START YOUNG AND STAY WITH IT
“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” – Margaret Fuller
Reading allows us to be transported from our own world to another. Between the pages of a book, we can become immersed in the lives of fictional characters and learn about a culture entirely different from our own. We can also learn new words and phrases, experience a range of emotions, and acquire skills and knowledge.
Because of the learning potential, the effects of reading on child development are vast and multiple studies have highlighted its benefits. As such, teachers and parents are in a great position to ensure reading is a key part of children’s daily routine. Reading does not really start at any age, even from infancy, kids can start with picture books and fairy tales. Let’s explore some benefits importance of reading:
- Improved literary skills: Early child reading helps with language acquisition and stimulating the part of the brain that processes language.
- More extensive vocabulary: Hearing words spoken aloud can expose children to a range of new vocabulary and phrases that they may not have heard otherwise.
- Higher levels of creativity and imagination: Reading a book makes us use our imagination for picturing characters, visualizing their settings and environment, and guessing what’s coming next. We must use our imagination if we are to learn about other people, places, events, and times.
- Gain a deeper understanding of their world
- Improved social skills and interaction.
“Once you have read a book you care about, some part of it is always with you.” – Louis L’Amour.

Engaging in Physical Activities at Home
In view of the current health concern across the globe which has necessitated the need to temporarily close the school and rather engage students through virtual and online teaching and learning, it also important to consider that learning engagement during physical school periods were not exclusively academic. Personal Social and Physical Education remains an integral part of the holistic IB learning program at C.I.A. Physical activities promote the development of knowledge, attitudes, and social skills that contribute to the physical, emotional, cognitive, spiritual, and social well-being of students in the homerooms and beyond.
The WHO has issued guidelines that state children should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous-intensity, bone, and muscle-bearing physical activity each day.
Physical activity has an impact on the social responsibility of children, especially at the adolescent stage. At adolescence, children develop new hormones that introduce them to a new sense of self. Such hormones come with new and unfamiliar energies that could make or unmake them depending on how it is managed. Physical exercise has proven to be very effective in controlling such new hormonal energies when young ones are clueless about what to do with it.
Other additional benefits of physical exercise include: Maintaining physical fitness and weight; building and maintaining healthy bones, muscles and joints; promoting mental well-being; reducing medical complications and risks, and strengthening the immune system.
I entreat students to regularly exercise at home to improve their physical, mental, emotional, and social balance.
