Emmanuel Catholic College
College Newsletter - Term Four Week 9 - 13 December 2019
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Students and College Community,
It is hard to believe that the 2019 academic year has quickly come to an end. This year the College has celebrated many success stories and I am very proud of all our students’ achievements over the year.
Yesterday I was informed that our English and Arts building that was formally Blessed and Opened in Semester Two last year has received a Commendation Award for its contemporary design from Learning Environments West Australia. The Award is an acknowledgement that the facility is a fantastic learning environment, with its modern design and pragmatic nature for a school setting. My congratulations to Mr Tony D’Andrea, our College architect from EIW Architects and Sonja Matthes, our College Business Manager, for the dedication and fine work to this project.
Last night, I was fortunate to attend the Kwinana Industry Council Bright Sparx Presentation Ceremony for students who successfully participated in the program at Murdoch University. Congratulations to Sam Galipo from Year 9 who was involved with the program and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The program gave Sam the opportunity to participate in university life in a science context with students from other schools. Congratulations Sam.
There will be a few new initiatives to the College in 2020. I have summarised these in a letter that will come home to all families next week.
The College will continue to grow in numbers in 2020 and currently we are expecting sixty extra students at the commencement of the new academic year, including nearly 200, Year 7 students. It is really pleasing to know that so many new families are very keen to join our community and I look forward to the positive contribution that they and existing students will bring to Emmanuel in 2020.
As I mentioned earlier, next year we will have a number of new staff. Whilst some of these are to negate the increasing number of students at the College, some are because we are saying goodbye to staff who are leaving Emmanuel. Staff leaving this year are: Brodie Bates, Chloe Collard, Trish Costarella, Brett Hill, Asha Holmsen, Peter Legg, Samantha Mallon, Jo McNally, Sara Middleton, Kerry Reynolds, Melle Smith and Nicole Willey. I thank these staff members for their contribution to our College and I wish them well for their future endeavours. Replacing these staff are: Chelaine Antenucci, Jason Borserio, Br Sheldon Burke CRS, Hannah Brayshaw, Sophie Brewer, Irene Burkett, Jessica Carlucci, Rebecca Charleston, Belinda Colpitts, Tayla Doyle, Anita Jackman-Davey, Laura Kendall, Lynda McAullay, Mark McGough, John McGowan, Jan Rigoll, Simon Schmidberger, Claire Wallace and Matthew Zambon.
Finally, to the parents, staff and students of the College thank you for another great year. Next year promises to bring lots of excitement with many new initiatives for all community members.
I wish you all a very special and blessed Christmas and prosperous New Year.
God Bless,
Mr Leo Di Gregorio - Principal

'PROJECT ALTRUISTIC LOVE' BY YEAR 9 RELIGION STUDENTS
As we enter the 2019 Season of Advent, Year 9 Religious Education students have been encouraged to think of others less fortunate than themselves this Christmas. ‘Project Altruistic Love’ is the ‘brainchild’ of Religious Education Teacher, Mrs Stella John. From her own experience, compassion and witness of orphaned children in Vietnam, Mrs John was inspired to call our students to transform their learning in the classroom to Christian action for others.
‘Project Altruistic Love’ reinforces an important concept the Year 9 students have been learning in Term 4. The unit of work covered different types of love which included: love for God; love for family and friends; romantic love and altruistic love. Altruistic love demonstrates genuine concern and care for others whether we know them or not.
Mrs John called both her and Ms Sara Middleton’s class to write Christmas letters to twenty orphaned boys and girls at Mai am Rosa’s Orphanage. This particular orphanage is run by Dominican nuns in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and houses children and young people aged from two to seventeen years of age.
The Year 9 students did a wonderful job in composing cheerful and colourful Christmas letters communicating how Christmas is celebrated in Perth to the child they had been assigned. The ECC students are looking forward to receiving letters back from the Vietnamese children they have written to.
Ms Lana Turner, Head of Religion, was very supportive and encouraging, explaining that, “This project encapsulates the spirit of Advent and Emmanuel Catholic College – showing unconditional love for others as Christ did.”
As we approach this Advent and Christmas season, let us remember the greatest gift of all, Christ Jesus. As we give our material gifts, let us also remember to give the gift of love and compassion to those around us.
Ms Lana Turner - Head of Religious Education

AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC YOUTH FESTIVAL
The Australia Catholic Youth Festival was held from Sunday to Tuesday this week, with over 5000 young people gathering to learn, pray and experience faith. Emmanuel had students attend with both the College and their own Parishes. They spent three days exploring the theme “Listen to the Spirit”.
The highlights of the Festival were the plenary sessions held each day, that featured amazing music, including US Christian rapper Joe Melendrez and Fr Rob Galea, who enlivened and gave witness to the youth of the Church in Australia. Music was the link that waved through the whole Festival connecting what had been presented to the overall theme. Day two plenary features Walk Free Co-Founder Grace Forrest, who shared her passion for ending modern day slavery across the world. Each day also ended with a plenary prayer experience, with the first day being Taize prayer and the second an experience of Eucharistic Adoration.
Throughout the three-day Festival, there were opportunities for the youth to speak with the Bishops of Australia, challenging them with the place of faith in the modern world. They heard the Bishops and others share their ideas about a variety of topics including, climate, secularism and living out their faith. There was also an amazing expo, that presented different Catholic organisations to the youth of Australia.
The highlight of the final day was the afternoon pilgrimage from the Convention Centre to Trinity College. There were more than 5000 people travelling together, sharing their faith through conversation and prayer on the journey. The whole Festival culminated with an open air Mass celebrated by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB and concelebrated by more than 30 Australian Bishops and a number of Priests from around the country. Archbishop Costelloe encouraged the thousands of young Catholics to leave the Festival ready to open their hearts and lives to Jesus.

CHRISTMAS JOY FOR CHILDREN AT PERTH CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
This year Emmanuel Catholic College organised a project for children attending Perth Children’s Hospital as patients or as visitors. The College took on a challenge to create some craft kits that could be used by Starlight Foundation and Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation that would provide some Christmas cheer and some distraction to the children and their families.
One goal of PCH Foundation is to provide “positive patient and family experiences.”
The Foundation supports critically important non clinical program at PCH such as Art Therapy, Music Therapy and play therapy in Fun on Four that are making a significant difference to the ability of kids to cope with the rigours of medical procedures and recover quicker. Find out more
Starlight Foundation have a similar goal with their Starlight Express Room
A FUN HAVEN FOR PLAY
Where mayhem, joy and laughter are the order of the day.
We believe that play is the work of children. While sick kids often experience a very adult world of stress and trauma, play is the powerful force essential to developing resilience, wellbeing and a sense of normality.
Our Starlight Express Rooms are a medical free haven for sick kids and their families seeking a welcome break from the relentless cycle of medical treatments and procedures. It's the place we get down to the serious business of having fun!
Through the help of the Design and Technology Department, school staff and students gave up their own time before school, lunchtimes and after school to help paint, sand, clean, assemble and bag the kits ready for shipment to PCH. It was fantastic to see both staff and student model one of the College’s Core Values “We will show respect, compassion and service to others”. In the end close to 100 tea light kits and 50 trinket boxes were boxed up and presented to staff at PCH Foundation and Starlight Foundation at Perth Children’s Hospital on Fun on four.
We look forward to seeing the completed boxes and we hope to make this an annual relationship with both PCH foundation and Starlight Foundation and possibly local suppliers.
Mr Ian Dalton - Technologies Teacher

2020 STUDENT LEADERSHIP TEAMBUILDING
This week, the 2020 Student Leadership Team gathered for their training days to prepare them for the 2020 school year.
They participated in a series of workshops on team building, conflict resolution and difficult conversations, managing stress, organisation and planning meetings, as well as public speaking. We were joined by one of our Counsellors, Alex, who helped the students write a self-care plan. David, from Alpha Motivation presented a session on goal setting for success in school and leadership.
The Team looked at the College Strategic Plan 2020-2023 and presented Mr Di Gregorio with their ideas and responses to the plan. Following that, they participated in planning sessions within their portfolio, year groups and house groups and began planning for Emmanuel Day 2020. The two days were very busy and productive and the whole team of students and staff are excited about the year ahead and putting into practice, the ideas and initiatives we planned for next year. Congratulations and thanks to the Student Leaders, the House staff for their hard work and enthusiasm.
Mrs Teresa Cosgrove - Deputy Principal Years 7 & 8 - College Identity & Student Leadership

YEAR 9 BUSH RANGERS AT ROTTNEST
This week the Year 9 Bush Rangers went on their camp to Rottnest Island. The ferry ride over to the Island was very smooth and fast, the weather was perfect for our camp. We collected our bikes but found out that some people didn’t know how to ride a bike, after some hasty lessons we were ready to go, but then we discovered that Rottnest isn’t flat it is hilly. We completed a familiarity ride around the Island so we couldn’t be lost and have to swim back.
After lunch at the Island village area we rode to our accommodation and set up at Governors Circle. After lunch we were given the ‘Rotto Challenge’ quiz, which no-one has ever finished, it is about 100 questions on Rottnest sustainability, conservation, history, flora, fauna and local landmarks. After this we went back to Thompson Bay where we had lessons on stand-up boards. Following this it was time for dinner, as we were really hungry. Being Bush Rangers we have to prepare and cook our meals and clean up. Chloe Skinner was put in charge but was in trouble because she wanted to do the work, but, Mr Prigg made her delegate to us.
After dinner we walked over to the beach and went night fishing, no fish were caught, but Vincent and Dylan are still talking about the one that got away.
On Tuesday we went to Oliver's Hill where we were given a tour of the WW2 Gun Emplacements. In the afternoon we went to the Wadjemup lighthouse where we had a fantastic view of the whole Island, from there we had another swim and we saw a large sting ray swim below our stand-up boards. That night we rode to the old style picture theatre and watched the new Charlie's Angels movie, where the girls saved the day from bad guys. We then rode back to Governors Circle, using our torches to dodge around the Quokkas.
On the last day we had an early start with a beach-comb and campsite clean-up. Then we returned our bikes and helmets to the hire shop. Mrs Freda Ogilvie, an Aboriginal Elder, came to the Island and taught us about the Aboriginal History at Rottnest. The Island was used as a prison for Aboriginals, and in the small museum you can see many pictures that were taken of the Aboriginal prisoners in shackles and chains.
We then continued our island quiz, with a short trip to the Holy Trinity Church before lunch and then the ferry back to mainland Australia to sleep and recover. It was a great Camp, thanks to Mr Prigg, Mrs Winfield and Mr Ryan.

ECC's INAUGURAL eSPORTS TOURNAMENT
On Thursday afternoon last week 47 students from across Years 7, 8 and 9 came together for Emmanuel’s very first eSports Tournament. Students had fun racing against their peers in Mario Kart, with a heap of thrills and spills deciding who would race in the Grand Final. Our final four, made up of two Year 7s, a Year 8, and a Year 9, raced to determine who was the best player in the College. The event was won by Mason Jones in Year 9 but a massive congratulations to all students who took part.
Gaming is a fantastic way to break down social barriers and have children socialising across all demographics. Next year Emmanuel will have its own eSports Club aimed at providing social stimulation in a fun and competitive way for those who might not like traditional sports.
A huge thank you to Mr Ryan Gaynor for helping to organise and run the event.
Mr Alex Boyer - Humanities and Social Science Teacher
