Thank you to the Shuter Tribute Commitee!
The Shuter Tribute Committee recently donated $5000 to the OLMP Music program which will be used to buy keyboards from Martha's Music in Camrose. We are in the process of building a piano program with the expertise of Mr. Olson that will involve music technology and recording music.
More Information about the Shuter Tribute Commitee as well as their upcoming fundraiser is here.
Can you imagine a world without music??
Ten years ago, we hosted the very first “Music Rocks- Shuter Tribute Day” and made dreams come true for many musically gifted children. Since 2009, the Shuter Memorial Fund has raised over $60 000 that has been donated back to our community supporting kids that have the love of music, but perhaps lack the opportunity or means to nurture their talent.
Why do we do it??
Music is one of those things that is transformative.....it can change the world because it can change us as people. It is healing......it can either make you forget everything or remember everything…..it can take you to a specific place and time, stir emotions and communicate where words fail. One song can bring back 1000 memories.
Music transcends barriers; whether it be race, language, religion or economic status- it speaks to all human kind and reminds us that we are the same...it is a common thread throughout the world.... it connects us all.....and that is a powerful thing. If you look at the world around you- music is EVERYWHERE~ television, radio, church and sporting events, just to name a few, life wouldn’t be the same without music.
There are kids out there who are not athletically inclined, but still want to be a part of a group- something bigger than themselves. Music, drama, art, these become that outlet for these kids who have something to say and want to feel that connection......
Music is food for our soul- and the kids are the future of that……Why wouldn’t we support it?
Thank you to Mr. McLean for organizing a Karate Experience for OLMP students this week!
Thank you to Action for Healthy Communities
This week the high school English Language Learners enjoyed activities led by staff from Action for Healthy Communities. The organization’s mission is, “To build the capacity of individuals and groups to improve their lives and communities ...” One group they focus on is newcomers to Canada. The group spent time with students in class and at an after-school conversation club.
This new partnership will continue to benefit OLMP as the staff plan to visit regularly to support, mentor and train staff and students. All students are welcome to join the new Conversation Club where this partnership will be extended to time after standard school hours Tuesdays after school from 3:40 - 4:40. Thank you to Mrs. Nagy for putting in the time to establish this partnership and obtain funding through this collaboration for ELL supports and programs for our community.
First Nation Metis and Inuit Education
As of September 2019 it will be mandatory for all teachers to embed Indigenous teachings into the Kindergarten to Grade 12 Curriculum. This will include content specific to First Nation, Metis and Inuit perspectives and experiences, as well as content on the significance of residential schools and treaties. An important first step to understanding why these changes are taking place is participation in a blanket exercise. OLMP Parent/School Council will be hosting a community blanket exercise on Tuesday, March 19th from 6:30 - 9:00pm. Any parents interested in attending can email Mrs. Smith at kristys@eics.ab.ca to register. Space is limited.
Our School will also be hosting an Indigenous Awareness Day on March 13th which will include an opening ceremony, sessions throughout the day and a closing ceremony. Any OLMP Indigenous (First Nation, Metis, or Inuit) families interested in attending all or part of that day or who are interested in running a session are welcome to contact Mrs. Smith to get involved in this day of awareness and cultural celebration of the first people of this land - Treaty 6.

Book Recommendation
Book Recommended: The Mysterious Benedict Society
Author: Trenton Lee Stewart
Recommended by: Tanner Sheets (Grade 6 Student at OLMP)
Book Description: Four smart and intelligent kids go on a mission to stop a bad guy (Mr.Curtain) from sending messages into people’s minds throughout the world. The messages were made so that Mr.Curtain could convince the people of the world he should rule them.
Why it is recommended: I recommended this book because I loved how smart and unique
all the kids were.I also loved that all the kids were very brave and bold. But I mostly
recommended it because in my opinion it was by far the best book I have ever read.
