Principal's Post
Viking Nation,
I hope everybody had a restful and fun weekend. It is important for all of us to remember the importance of taking time to refresh and recharge, especially this time of year as this week begins testing season! I want to offer thanks to everyone who works so hard behind the scenes to make this part of the year as smooth as possible as well as thank our teachers for their thoughtful attention and hard work during this busy time.
Please be on the lookout for TELPAS emails and reminders from Ms. Glienke and Mr. De La Cruz. Soon we will move into EOC and AP testing, the culmination of a year’s worth of work for many of you. I know our students are prepared and will be ready to perform.
During the stress of testing season it is also important to remember all the great things happening at Lanier! The spring is the time to reflect and celebrate on all we have accomplished this year, even as we begin to plan for an even better next school year. Keep an eye out for new ways Lanier High School will work to recognize and celebrate all the great things going on here on campus.
Three weeks until Spring Break Lanier! Let’s stay focused all the way through. Have a great week everyone.
REMINDER- GT Training for PREAP & AP STAFF
Reminder for GT teachers who teach any Pre-AP or AP course that this is the last week (2/28) to update GT training. Please email Foad Idais with any questions or concerns.

Green Teens & Aquatic Science Day of Service
10 awesome Lanier students representing Lanier’s: Green Teens, Eco Team, and Interact Clubs, as well as our Aquatic Science class and the Lanier's students from the Austin Youth River Watch program woke up early on MLK Day and turned their day off into a day of service. They were a part of group of 80 volunteers from around Austin who helped Austin Youth River Watch clean almost a ton of trash from Buttermilk Creek and plant native Eastern Gamma grass to help restore native riparian habitats. If you see any of these awesome student be sure to thank them for helping out their community.
Cosmetology- A Career While Still In High School
While this field has become a billion dollar industry, it is no longer limiting you behind the salon chair. You can advance yourself by starting your own business, or you can become a marketing /sales specialist of the beauty industry. It is not uncommon to find Cosmetologist making a six figure income. Other avenues include working in MedSpa’s as an esthetician. Not to forget, working in TV, films, educators and many more.
- Our department here at Lanier is very proud of all our graduates who passed their state exams and were hired in salons before even graduating. Some of them are continuing with their college career while practicing cosmetology on the side and paying their tuition. It is a very passionate, interesting and fun career.
- Our services not only include hair but it is also extended to nail and skin care. Facials, acrylics, gel nails, henna tattoos, makeup, hair styling---you name it, our trained team will do it. Our students enjoy advance learning from guest speakers, formal trainings at the host site, field trips, participation in hair shows and working on clients.
- Most private Cosmetology schools around Austin cost around $20,000, and require students to take out loans that will last for years. Here at Lanier, our Cosmetology students’ graduate beauty school with no debt, which gives them a tremendous head start in life.
Come and visit us anytime to get a feel of our department and talk to our energetic team. We are open 7:30 am to 6 pm. Also if you are interested in getting a hair, skin or nail service feel free to stop by or email us to make an appointment with one of our students.
JAZZ BAND UPDATES!
Also, this Thursday, February 28, the jazz band will be performing at the MASBA (Mexican American School Board Association) reception at the Renaissancce Hotel. Jazz band has been working very hard this year, and are looking forward to performing at this event.

Reminder- Bright Spot Program
Please help spread the word about the Bright Spot program, as it has officially started! So far, we have had only a few requests for supplies and we know the need has great. What is Bright Spot? The Bright Spot Program (subsidiary of the Austin Diaper Bank) is working with Kotex to bring feminine products (pads and pantiliners) to all Lanier HS students AND their families. There are signs in the girls' bathrooms to let the students know who they can see to get free period supplies for both themselves and their families if needed.
