LEVEL 1 - Target Audience:

This workshop is appropriate for all members of the educational team who would like to learn about the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) including speech-language pathologists, parents, teachers, paraprofessionals, behavior analysts, psychologists, social workers and/or other professionals who are providing services to/for individuals with developmental disabilities.

LEVEL 1 Course Overview & Details

Objectives:


  • Identify key components to designing an enriched learning environment using the Pyramid Approach to Education.
  • Identify strategies for creating opportunities for communication across the day
  • Implement the six phases of the PECS protocol
  • Discuss the evidence about PECS and its relationship to speech
  • Examine the criteria for transitioning from PECS to other communication modalities such as speech and SGDs



Dates and Times: Each level is two days (13 hours), with a one-hour lunch break each day

  • Level 1, Day One: Thursday, October 10, 2019, (8:00 am - 4:00 pm)
  • Level 1, Day Two: Friday, October 11, 2019, (8:00 am - 4:00 pm)

LEVEL 2 Target Audience

This workshop is appropriate for anyone who has taken the PECS Level 1 Training. It is recommended that you implement the skills from PECS Level 1 Training for several months before attending the Level 2. In so doing, you will have time to implement the skills described and will likely have questions. The expert consultant will guide the group through many problem-solving discussions, as well as offer examples from their wealth of experience.

LEVEL 2 Course Overview & Details

Objectives:

  • Identify the six phases of the PECS protocol
  • Analyze common difficulties with PECS implementation
  • Generate solutions to common challenges with implementing PECS
  • Provide communication opportunities across the day in all activities
  • Implement specific strategies for teaching advanced language concepts


Dates & Times: Each level is two days (13 hours), with a one-hour lunch on your own.

Level 2, Day One- Tuesday, January 14, 2020 (8:00 am - 4:00 pm)

Level 2, Day Two- Wednesday, January 15, 2020 (8:00 am - 4:00 pm)

Registration Fees:

You may register for one or the other, but you may also register for both levels. There is a $25.00 discount for registering for both levels.


Level 1:


  • $275 per participant for Champaign, Madison, Clark, Hardin, Shelby, and Logan County Public School Districts, Boards of DD, & Career Centers.


  • $290 per participant for school districts outside of the above counties or other agencies/non-profits.




Level 2:


  • $200 per participant for Champaign, Madison, Clark, Hardin, Shelby, and Logan County Public School Districts, Boards of DD, & Career Centers.


  • $215 per participant for school districts outside of the above counties or other agencies/non-profits

Important Information & Reminders - LEVEL 1

This is a prerequisite for LEVEL 2. It is recommended that you take the material learned in LEVEL 1 back to your work environment and implement it prior to LEVEL 2, so that you can bring back any insights, questions, etc. for the presenter.


If you have been trained in LEVEL 1 previously, please be sure to provide a copy of the certificate of completion so that you can register for LEVEL 2.


What time should I arrive at the training site? Check-in begins 30 minutes prior to the start of the session, so be sure to arrive in plenty of time to complete the check-in and find a seat.


Food & Beverage: Coffee, bottled water and assorted breakfast bars will be available at the beginning of each session. Additional assorted small snacks will be available in the afternoon, and soda is available to purchase for $0.50 from the front desk administrative assistant.

Lunch will be on your own. Please plan accordingly.


What You Should Bring: Participants should bring note taking materials and writing utensils with them to the session.


Out Cancellation Policy - Due to the high cost of materials and the cancellation policy of the presenter's company, cancellations must be received by October 1, 2019 for LEVEL 1. Cancellations received outside of this policy will not be accepted. Attendees and/or employing districts will be billed accordingly.
