Glenealy School Newsletter
25th April 2018

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students
Y4 Camp
Pier jumping, dragon boating, climbing walls and using a campfire to cook some chocolate -stuffed bread you made yourself! These were just some of the many highlights that our Y4 children have shared with me following their first school overnight camp that took place on Thursday and Friday last week. As you can see from the beautiful pictures at the top of this newsletter, the setting in Tai Tam was stunning and allowed our students to really connect with nature.
Sadly, after more than 80 Glenealy overnight camps, this was Mrs. Thompson’s last. She leaves behind a great legacy as she has dedicated many hours to ensure that Glenealy’s outdoor education experiences have the perfect balance of challenge and fun.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Glenealy staff who attended the camp. The responsibility of being part of a team who are in ‘loco-parentis’ for 60 children can be exhausting, though definitely worth it, as the camps are often life changing events for the children who form positive memories that last a lifetime.
Y6 Exhibition
Do look out for the new Y6 Exhibition banner which will soon be on display in the playground.
The banner features all of our Y6 students with the central ideas they have created to help shape their own inquiries. The wonderful Logo of Hong Kong featuring the Global Goals was designed by our very own David Meakins and the slogan 'If WE change, others will!' was devised by Giovanni Lucchini.
The PYP Exhibition happens in the final year of all PYP schools and involves students working collaboratively to conduct an in-depth inquiry into an area they would like to take action in. We are now just a week away from the Exhibition and many students have taken action to make a positive difference to our community, Hong Kong and the world.
More actions that may require your involvement can be seen in the Y6 Exhibition Action section of this Newsletter.
Taking Action.
Taking Action is a key component of the PYP and making a positive difference is part of our mission statement here at Glenealy. Children across the school are encouraged to take action throughout their learning (not just during the Year 6 Exhibition).
Taking this into account, I thought I would share the following reading on the benefit mindset, which is based on the belief that, with effort, we can use what we have learned to lead – and make a meaningful difference for ourselves and the world. Better off with a benefit-mindset.
Kind regards,
Dave

Book Drive
Dear Students,
Do You have any books that you can donate?
On Thursday 26th April & Friday 27th April, we will be collecting books to donate to a charity called Kids4Kids. The books you donate will be given to kids in local and regional communities in and around Hong Kong.
The books must be:
English picture books
Are suitable for ages 3-12
In good condition
With encouraging themes of friendship, inclusion, kindness, happiness and positivity
Should not contain violent themes
No exercise, sticker, coloring or puzzle books please
We will be collecting the books in the downstairs playground or you could bring them to Class 6S in the morning.
Our Exhibition Group is doing Quality Education for Girls, and we want to collect books to help children get a better education and exposure to different books that they may not otherwise have. You can find out more information about Kids4KIds here:

Cents Collection
Hello Parents and Students,
You may have seen us in playground this week as we collect HK cents coins for the charity Impact HK.
Impact HK is a charity that helps the homeless. They provide them with food, water and other daily needs. We are using a large re-cycled water bottle to collect the coins in the lower playground and we will be here every morning this week 8:00 - 8:30 am and afternoon 3:00 - 3:15 pm.
Thank you to those who have already put their cents into the bottle. We will be there tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday for those of you who haven’t had a chance to donate your cents yet!
If you want to find out more about Impact HK, find out here:
Thank you so much for helping the homeless in Hong Kong.
From,
Imogen, Abigail and Beecher.
Dear Parents and adults,
We are an exhibition group focusing on refugees and how to help them. For our action, in support of the NGO Christian Action we are having a clothes drive on Friday 27th April and Monday 30th April before and after school.
We would like to have any old T-shirts, jeans, and warm layers, and any unwanted clothes in good condition. We will also welcome shoes as long as they are clean and in good condition.
We hope to see you on Friday or Monday,
Kind regards,
From,
Tvisha, Rashida and Finlay
