St Luke's Catholic Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 4 | WEEK 9 | 8 DECEMBER 2021
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Community Members,
In writing my last newsletter as Principal at St Luke’s School, I am able to reflect on just what a unique and special place St Luke’s is to be a part of. Sometimes we, as humans, forget to stop and smell the roses. Our school and parish are just the most amazing places, filled with many wonderful and vibrant people. I want to thank each and everyone one of you for supporting me and helping make me a better person and principal. St Luke’s will be forever etched in my heart. I wish to take this opportunity to remind you all of the words of Catherine McAulay:
“God does not bestow all His choicest blessings on one person. He did not give to St. Peter what He gave to St. Paul nor to either what He gave to St. John.”
Graduation and Thanksgiving Mass
Our Graduation and Thanksgiving Mass yesterday morning, was a wonderful celebration of a very busy year together, as we celebrated the achievements, and gave thanks for the many blessings received by all of us. Our Catholic faith is at the heart of our school and so it is fitting, that our final celebration together, is one centred on the Eucharist and our community of faith. As always, our students were reverent participants in the Mass and are a credit to their teachers and parents. Also, many thanks to the many parents, grandparents and friends, who were able to make the time, to enjoy this celebration with us. Congratulations to our student readers, Mrs Longbottom and Choir for the music, Mrs Muir and Mrs von Bergheim and students for the Liturgical Dance, Mrs Pollard and Mr Miller for coordinating and leading the Mass and also thank you to Father Stephen, Fr Rueben and Acolyte Mike Featherstone for celebrating Mass with us all.
Congratulations to Our Graduating Year Six Students. We wish them well, as they continue their journey to secondary education, and we thank them for the gift of their presence and contributions to St Luke’s School during their time here. Thank you also to all the members of the St Luke’s teaching team for their support and contribution to all of our students during 2021 – their constant commitment to our students is truly a gift to this community.
Christmas Concert
What a wonderful evening last Friday was, with our Christmas Concert! I wish to congratulate all the children for their singing and dancing. A huge thank you to Mrs Simmonds for designing the backdrop; thank you to Mr Hogan for setting up all the lights and Christmas decorations and thank you to all the staff for preparing the children so well. A special mention and thank you to Mrs Julie von Bergheim who helped with the dances in Mrs Muir’s absence. Thank you to Mrs Longbottom and Mrs Williams for preparing the songs for each class to sing, well done!
Mater Dei Scholarship Recipients
I take this opportunity to wish you all God’s blessings for this very Holy Season, and may you remain safe during the holidays and return rested and renewed for 2022 on Monday, 31 January. Peace be with you all. "Open your presents at Christmas time but be thankful year round for the gifts you receive.” - Lorinda Ruth Lowen.
God bless you and May the Force Be With You….Always!

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS
Butterflies & Prayer Garden Update
As many are aware, the school has introduced a prayer memorial space within the prayer garden. Thank you to the families who have requested names to be placed on the wall, due to the loss of a loved one. These butterflies will be installed on the prayer wall in the 2022 school year. This is the plan that will follow:
- Butterflies will be blessed by Fr Stephen at an assembly. Families will be invited to attend a special blessing at the prayer garden after butterflies have been blessed and installed. Date to be advised.
- Lawn Turf will be installed in late December of 2021 – A huge THANK YOU to the P&F committee for funding this project. We are truly grateful.
- Water Feature, bench seats, lighting and additional plants will be added to complete the prayer garden.
- Mary Grotto space to be completed.
The school community is excited that the space will be utilised by all school students and staff, as well as the school community. We look forward to the completion of the prayer space and the addition of our butterflies in 2022.

Shine
This semester, the Year 5 and 6 Gifted and Talented students have been working on an inquiry-based learning program. The inquiry approach allows students to work on a project or idea they are passionate about in class time. This project encourages and fosters the students’ sense of curiosity, ownership and empowerment over their learning, both in and out of the classroom.
Students have come up with some very rich and thoughtful research questions:
- How has iron ore impacted Australia?
- How do libraries benefit the local community?
- What would happen if all the continents were still connected?
- How and why has baking changed over time?
- What would the impact be on the world if there were no governments?
- What would life be like if the Dutch had colonised Australia?
- Why do we need the periodic table of elements?
Last Thursday, 2 December, we held an exhibition night to showcase our learning in the library. I want to thank all the students for their hard work and their parents for their ongoing support.
Justin Kirry
GIFTED AND TALENTED TEACHER
A note of thanks from St Vinnies...
We just wanted to say a big thank you to Mrs Pollard, Mr Miller and the Year 6 students for suggesting and coordinating the collection of food and other items for the St Luke's Parish Woodvale Vinnies conference. Without the help of the St Luke's Primary School community, we would not be able to help as many people as we currently do.
It was a nice touch to see some of the boxes decorated and with Christmas messages.
Thank you once again and we hope we will be able to do it again next year. Wishing you and your families a safe and healthy and blessed Christmas and I hope you and Justin enjoy a well deserved break
God Bless.
Kind regards,
Travice and all Members of the Woodvale Vinnies Conference.
We are aware of the delay in school bag deliveries. As this is beyond anyone's control we understand that some children may initially bring a different backpack until theirs arrives. We thank you for your understanding with this matter.
