Ms. Hooper's Class Happenings
Week of August 29, 2016
English / Language Arts
This is the largest block of time during our day. It encompasses the entire morning. During this time, students will be actively engaged in reading, writing, phonics, listening, speaking, vocabulary development, story telling, etc.
To begin the year, we will review basic foundations such as letter / sound relationships, sequencing of CVC words, and checking for understanding while reading.
The ELI, Early Literary Inventory, will be administered to each student individually over the next few weeks. The results will be shared with parents during our scheduled conference in October.
We will also begin learning the Daily 5 Rotations: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, Listen to Reading.
Math
Our Math time will be in the afternoon. The curriculum for first grade is challenging. We will begin right off the bat with addition combinations up to 10. This will also include story problems, equations with missing addends, ex: 3 + __ = 10, equations with more than two addends, ex: 2 + 3 + 4 = 9. Subtraction is also taught right along side addition.
Science / Social Studies
We will alternate between Science and Social Studies. To start the year, we will be learning about properties of matter in Science. In doing so, students will be categorizing objects into groups. This will then lead into extension lessons linked to recycling which is an important focus at Cross Oaks. :)
