Golden Lions!

Our positive reinforcement program at Lakeview this year is called "Golden Lion" for the Lakeview Lions. We want to consistently recognize the South Milwaukee character traits and our Lakeview expectations. Those include:

South Milwaukee Character Traits: Respect, Responsibility, Kindness, Honesty, Perseverance

Lakeview expectations: Be safe, Be respectful, Be engaged.

Whenever a staff member sees a student showing one of these, the staff member has the option of awarding the student a "Golden Lion". Behavior and student character at Lakeview is excellent on a daily basis, so I'm sure we could award Golden Lions constantly. But officially, 136 Golden Lions were awarded since September 25th when we started the program (32 school days ago).

When a student receives a Golden Lion, their picture is taken and posted near the office with their certificate for everyone to see. On Friday, November 9th, we held an assembly and returned all 136 tickets to students to take home. And now, we begin collecting a new collection of Golden Lions. Keep up the good work!

We would like to thank the PTO for their support of elementary literacy!

Achievement Gap Reduction Goals

Lakeview is an AGR school (Achievement Gap Reduction) school. This program (formerly known as SAGE) provides funds to schools with certain levels of socioeconomic needs, particularly in 5K through 3rd grade. The state provides us a list of choices about how to use those funds, and at Lakeview, we choose to use it in a combination of two ways. Our AGR strategies include reducing class sizes and providing instructional coaching to our teachers. Classroom size reduction means having more sections of a grade level so that each section has a smaller number of students. Instructional coaching means we have one staff member whose job is to work with all of our teachers to increase their impact in teaching literacy and math.

Many of you know Ms. Swick. Ms. Swick has been a fantastic educator at Lakeview for many years. She is still here at Lakeview as our instructional coach. This means that Ms. Swick gets to impact the lives of all of our students by coaching our teachers to make consistent improvements to their already excellent daily teaching practice.

This week, the School Board of South Milwaukee officially approved our AGR goals for this year. The goals include working with 5K students on pre- and beginning literacy skills, working with 1st grade students on spelling, and closing the gap-to-proficiency in both reading and math in 2nd through 5th grades. Thank you to our school board for continuing to support our AGR program at Lakeview!

Cold Lunch procedures for field trips

This year, when a field trip takes place over the lunch hour, students will have the option of receiving a bagged lunch from the nutrition staff to take along on the field trip. When this option is necessary, there will be an order form stapled to the permission slip. Please be sure to fill it out and return it if you would like to have our nutrition staff provide a bagged lunch on these days. Of course, you always have the option of sending a cold lunch to school with your student.

Early Childhood Screenings

Every year, the school district of South Milwaukee hosts opportunities for children between the ages of 3-5 who are not enrolled to be assessed for developmental issues. The screenings help to identify possible delays that may warrant further evaluation. If interested, you need to schedule an appointment ahead of time. Please see this flyer for more information and the phone number for appointments.
