Wade King Elementary
A Note From the Principal
Dear Wade King Families,
The 'central idea' guiding our staff professional development this year is:
Inclusive practices cultivate belonging, engagement, and learner agency.
We aim to keep 'inclusive practices' at the forefront of our professional learning as we explore current and new ways of engaging with students. Our teachers and staff understand that students learn best when they feel socially connected, when they feel a sense belonging at school. Cultivating a sense of belonging is therefore a significant part of our work in the first weeks/months of school through such activities as morning meetings, small group work and regular activities like learning how to eat lunch together in the cafeteria.
Feeling a sense of belonging is something we hope everyone in our Wade King community experiences. Events such as the 'meet ups' during the summer months, the family BBQ on the day before school, and the recent Fall Carnival are excellent ways to bring us together. Thank you to the PTA for organizing and hosting these events! Another way is participating in the upcoming parent/student/teacher conferences. Students will share what they've learned so far in school, and parents/guardians will have the chance to meet with teachers. Please look for details about fall conferences below.
Wishing you all well during these colorful, crisp, yet increasingly dark autumn days!

Lower Gate Safety Is Important!
Lost and Found
Arrival and Dismissal Traffic Flow Is Working - Thank You!
Thank you for pulling your car all the way up through the loading zone in the pick-up loop. Our dismissal has been moving very quickly, and we have been able to safely load students and clear cars from Yew Street Rd. in about under 5 minutes.
Here is a refresher about last month's directions for our loading zone:
If you are picking up or dropping off students, please pull up as far as you can in the pick-up loop. To promote safety, we are asking students to load and unload into cars in the loop in front of the school and by the lawn rather than along the sidewalk where the buses park. This should help keep the line moving and still maintain safety. Remember to stay in your car; this is a loading zone.
If you need to get out of your car, please park in the parking lot and walk to the front of the school. For those wishing to arrive early for pick-up, please park at the end of the loop by the limited mobility access parking. We ask that you not leave your car idling for long periods of time as our direct access air intake can bring in your exhaust fumes.
Thank you for keeping our students safe!
Learning About the IB PYP's Transdisciplinary Themes
As an IB school running the Primary Years Programme, much of our learning is organized into units of inquiry that fall under what are called "transdisciplinary themes." The IB PYP identifies six transdisciplinary themes, and each year students engage in a unit of inquiry for each of the six themes. The exception to this is Kindergarten (and Promise K), who engage in just four units of inquiry throughout the year. Our program of inquiry is designed so that students at Wade King will explore all the aspects of each of the themes through their units of inquiry from Kindergarten to 5th grade. The transdisciplinary themes are: Who We Are, How We Express Ourselves, Where We Are in Place & Time, How We Organize Ourselves, How the World Works and Sharing the Planet.
Please visit this link to see an overview of the transdisciplinary themes, along with their definitions. If you would also like to see the Wade King units of inquiry within each theme, please have a look at our Wade King Program of Inquiry for 2022-23. Our Program of Inquiry (or POI, as it is frequently referred to) lays out all of the units of inquiry taught across the school, and is categorized by the transdisciplinary themes. Learning through the transdisciplinary themes helps us build conceptual understandings that transcend the disciplines and integrate the content across the traditional subject areas.

Mrs. Wakefield, School Counselor
Rain! Rain! Rain! Hooray! Our rainy season came late this year and colder winter weather will likely be close behind! Our PTA is having a warm winter wear drive! We are collecting new or nearly new coats. We would also happily accept hats and mittens / gloves and winter boots. If your student needs winter wear, please reach out to me.
And with wintery weather comes our holidays and holiday gift card drive! As the counselor for Wade King Elementary over the previous four years I have been amazed at the generosity of our Wade King community. Collectively we have been successful at fulfilling the needs of our families during the holidays. Yes, in our own Wade King Elementary community we have families in need, and as we know, holidays are a particularly difficult time of year. Our collective financial support has fulfilled gift wish lists and provided family meals for an average of 30 families every year — an average of 68 children that received gifts due to your generosity! What often catches my breath when connecting with a family around gift wishes, is to hear them request winter boots, new tennis shoes, or a new sweatshirt. I am hopeful to keep our tradition of support going strong and vibrant this year. This year again, the PTA and I invite you to participate in our Gift Card Drive. I will continue to connect with our families, hear their need, and with your contribution, I will be able to offer a gift card to fulfill that need. Gift cards from Fred Meyer and Target offer the most variety; clothing, gifts and food, and any amount is appreciated. Gift cards in $25 increments work best. We will be accepting gift card donations up until December 2nd. This allows us time to gift our families in need prior to the winter break. As always, we are thankful for each and every one of you who make up this incredible Wade King Community!
In Gratitude, Jaymie Wakefield, Counselor, and the Wade King PTA Team!
