Message from Supt. Loving
I am writing to share that we are currently seeing higher than usual student absent rates at two of our schools; Sublimity and Mari-Linn. These student absences are being reported to us as flu-like illnesses. Click the link for OHA info. (RSV and Influenza) (Espanol). The rates we are seeing at all schools this week are as follows:
We are also seeing some higher-than-usual staff illness absences at all of our schools. We are closely monitoring both student and staff attendance rates and communicating daily with principals. Our number one priority is to keep schools open. That said, if any single school hits the 30+% student absence rate, we may need to consider closing that school for one or more days.
Also, if we have significant staff absences at a school and we cannot secure enough substitute teachers or coverage from within the District, we may need to consider closing that school for one or more days.
Again, our number one priority is to keep each of our schools open. We will continue to monitor each school closely and communicate with families the best we can. We know that closing a school for one or more days has a significant impact on student learning and subjects our families to unique burdens. We are working hard to prevent closing a school but some circumstances are beyond our control. Please give our staff grace as we work to keep schools running as much as possible.
We are taking additional measures at school to prevent the spread of illness. These include effective hand washing, correct coughing etiquette, and the cleaning of our schools' high touch points areas.
If your student is experiencing any symptoms of illness, please follow the “May Return After” requirements** to keep your student from passing their illness to others. When reporting a student is home sick, please use the online form to report the absence. There is now an icon on the mobile app that links you to this form.
Sunsetting COVID Data Dashboard
With the overall decrease in COVID testing among the public, the dashboard is no longer providing meaningful information. As a result, effective today, we will be sunsetting our COVID data dashboard. In the event of an identified outbreak in a cohort, we will collaborate with our local public health authorities. As a reminder, COVID home tests remain readily available at all of our schools. Healthcare providers continue to suggest taking a COVID test when ill to rule out COVID so having a few tests on hand at home is a good idea.
Thank you for your partnership in helping us keep our schools open and students learning. We encourage you to keep this information handy and refer to it as needed.
Sincerely,
Lee W. Loving
