Reading
This week, we took a little break from our nonfiction unit to have some fun with Gingerbread! There are so many variations of The Gingerbread Man that we enjoyed comparing. We discussed how the titles, characters, repeated words, endings of each story were similar or different. We also used two hula hoops to create a Venn Diagram to compare the characters in the books. Here are some of the books we read: The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Girl, The Gingerbread Baby, The Gingerbread Boy, The Gingerbread Pirates, The Ninjabread Man, and Gingerbread Friends.
Math
We are finishing up our Unit on Counting 10-20 and Place Value. Students are able to write numbers 0-20, count up to 20 objects, and understand that a teen number is a group of ten and some more ones. We will continue to develop these skills and number sense throughout the school year because this understanding will build the foundation for math skills in years to come!
Writing
We wrote about our Gingerbread story favorites as well. Students were able to draw their favorite part from a Gingerbread Book. They also wrote which book was their favorite and why. One of the most popular answers their writing was when the Gingerbread Cookie jumped or popped out of the oven!
6th Grade Learning Buddies
During 6th Grade Learning Buddies, we did a Gingerbread Man Science Experiment! We wondered why the Gingerbread Cookies were all so afraid to go in the river. We wrote a hypothesis, observed what happened when we put a gingerbread cookie in water, recorded our observations, and wrote a conclusion about why the Gingerbread Cookies did not swim across the river themselves.
