SM Parents As Teachers Newsletter

September 6, 2019

Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year!

My name is Leigh Anne Neal, and I am thrilled to add the role as principal at the Early Childhood Education Center to my responsibilities as the Assistant Superintendent for Early Childhood Education this school year. As part of this role, I am looking forward to the responsibilities of supervising our Shawnee Mission Parents as Teachers program. This is my 26th year as an educator in the Shawnee Mission School District. I have had the opportunity to serve as a special educator, classroom teacher, and district administrator. I am passionate about the importance of early childhood education! I have had the opportunity to meet some of you informally at the play center, and I am looking forward to getting to know you and your children this school year. I hope to join our parent educators on some of our home visits, so I will look forward to those opportunities as well.

The Shawnee Mission School District strives to offer high quality services through the Parents As Teachers program. Please contact me, leighanneneal@smsd.org or 913-993-6412, with any questions or feedback regarding the program.

Seeking Volunteers from Parents As Teachers to Serve on our School Site Council

As we begin a new school year, we are looking for volunteers for our SM Early Childhood Education Center School Site Council. The purpose of the school Site Council is to advise the school on such matters as student learning, education programs, school improvement planning, and accreditation issues. The site council also plays an advocacy role for the school regarding the same issues.

The School Site Council consists of a variety of members including the principal, teachers, other school personnel, parents of students attending the school, the business community, and other community groups.

If you are interested in serving as a member of our School Site Council, please fill out an application and return to the school office. You can also complete an online application, if you prefer.

Annual Notice for Families Receiving Home Visits

During home visits, please turn off TV and remove pets. Also, please turn on outdoor lights for evening visits. When inclement weather arrives, clear a path to prevent parent educator tumbles. Thank you.
