Weekly Happenings at Southeastern Elementary
Principal's Postings
Welcome to the March 18th edition of Southeastern Scene.
Dear Southeastern families:
This week Mrs. Chastain, Mrs. Monkul, Mrs. Smith and I spent time reflecting on how we can best support our students’ social development in terms of responsible and safe use of technology. This is especially important as they begin to use online games, texting and other social media platforms. It has become a topic of concern as we have seen an increase in school disruptions because of group texting and social media postings that are harmful to our school community. We have a responsibility to our students to help guide them and use these as a learning opportunity.
As a parent of young kids and someone who works with students from K-8, this weighs heavy on my heart. I have a great concern for students’ safety and mental health as they begin to explore the use of social networks and communicating via technology. Kids who feel safe, supported, connected, and loved are better able to navigate tricky situations. This would be a fantastic opportunity to open conversations with your child about their own use of technology and how they respond if they encounter things they feel are inappropriate or unsafe while online. We encourage all our families to closely monitor technology use on all devices (tablets, phones, and computers) and have regular dialogue with your child about what they are doing while online.
We want our students to understand that the things they say and post online can have a significant impact on themselves and their peers. A rule of thumb I always use is if you would not be willing to say it in front of your parents, teachers, or to your friend in person then we probably should not send it online either. It is important that students have an open line of communication and feel safe discussing things they may encounter with trusted adults at home and school. Some guiding questions for at home may be as follows:
Ask your child what they like about particular sites, platforms, or communication tools that they currently use.
Ask who they follow online and who is following them on any platforms they use
Take time to discuss the importance of privacy settings so that only people they personally know can access their online profiles. (This is a wonderful time to do a privacy check-up on their devices)
Ask them if they ever encounter inappropriate content or things that make them feel unsafe while online. How do they respond if they do? Walk them through the possible steps they may take if they do (they can ignore the person, take screen shots for evidence, block the person, report to trusted adults, report to the platform/site)

Student Placement survey
As Spring approaches, we know that many of our families are thinking about next school year. With this comes an urge to make special requests for specific teachers. Southeastern cannot honor teacher requests by name due to the unique make up of classrooms and potential change of teacher placements. We strive to select the best learning environment for your child to thrive. We value your input and offer this optional form for you to share your thoughts. Due to the high number of emails received, our administration team will not be responding to e-mails with these special requests but encourage you to take the time to complete this form for your child. Thank you for partnering with us at Southeastern Elementary!

Arriving to School Late
Students are increasingly coming to school late. This causes a decrease in much-needed instruction time, and a tardy marked in their skyward account. Morning car rider line ends at 7:45 a.m. If you are dropping your student(s) off at school after morning car rider, and there are no adult staff members present outside, you MUST park your car, walk your student into the building, and sign him/her in at the table inside door #1. It is a safety concern to let students out curbside without adult supervision, and we want to be certain that all students are safe while entering/exiting the building. Also, students dropped off late will be marked “tardy" in Skyward. A student is considered tardy when arriving after 7:45.
